Excellent review from Conjointly of the new shiny thing in the market research industry, the synthetic respondents. In less fancy language, market research responses generated by AI instead of humans. I guess the ABC is getting forgotten. Companies manufacture and sell stuff for humans. That is why market research exists in the first place: to get into humans' heads and help companies sell more, be more profitable, more competitive. So, it should be a rather simple logical conclusion that on products created for human usage, humans should be the ones giving answers about what they like to consume, when they like to consume, what they think about X and Y brand and so on. Well, there are some who are convinced that AI knows better than humans what humans should and will consume. Not only that, that AI knows better than humans what they think, will think, and will decide. About anything, as simple as that. And even if this was indeed crazy accurate (which is super highly debatable, because how exactly do you prove what's accurate or not): why would any major current market research buyer (Apple, Samsung, Unilever etc.) would ever risk wasting tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars on R&D to launch a product by using solely AI-generated data instead of asking the very humans that are supposed to buy the product? Not to mention the likely backlash on their stock in the capital markets? To make some little savings? 🙄

"It’s worth noting that because you do not know what most of the LLMs were trained on, you do not know what kind of knowledge they encode. Therefore you do not know when the topic of your research is in the training dataset and when it is not." I see a lot of discussion on AI in market research, particularly business leaders adopting methods like "synthetic respondents" to save money. I'm glad to read a more nuanced, and critical, take on this practice. The author raises several important questions regarding not just the quality of the data, but the reliability and validity. I imagine a great many false positives with synthetic respondents, and a lot of companies making very expensive mistakes! Fake data? Fake Results. Everyone is trying to race to the bottom and deliver results as cheaply as possible, but worthless results are worth just that. NOTHING. (and they still waste a lot of real people's time) The faith people put in AI is still finding ways to unsettle me. No, you can't replace real humans by creating new "synthetic responses" to complete a survey. Data quality has always been an issue, but now people are trying to sell us on the idea that "it isn't a bug, it's a feature" of modern research. NOPE. This is a great article on the rise of "synthetic" data, and the strange way it has gotten a seat at the table despite the obvious problems and liabilities. If we can use AI to generate fake responses, how about we use it to catch them instead and drive data quality higher? That's the future I want. #mrx #dataquality #marketresearch #surveydesign
