The commitment to elevate Basketball in the UK to unprecedented heights across the nation is indeed commendable. However, to truly capitalize on this momentum and raise awareness effectively, we must address a critical shortfall—a robust foundational support for basketball in the UK. Your observations regarding the current state of basketball infrastructure are spot on. Despite the burgeoning interest and willingness from organizations like the British Basketball Federation (BBF) to foster the sport, our foundational structures remain woefully inadequate. Conversations with young enthusiasts, like the 13-year-old aspiring to play professionally, highlight a glaring issue: a significant lack of support at the grassroots level. Schools, often the nurseries of budding talent, predominantly favor football, sidelining basketball both in terms of interest and resource allocation. This bias extends beyond school premises, reflecting in our community planning as well. The absence of accessible basketball courts, where the nearest facility requires a 45-minute travel for just an hour of play, speaks volumes about the oversight in urban and community planning. Moreover, the scarcity of qualified coaches further stifles the growth and professional grooming of potential talent. While the willingness of entities like the BBF to initiate change is a positive sign, it is imperative that we first strengthen our foundation. This involves not just creating but also actively promoting accessible basketball infrastructure in schools and local communities. Councils must be encouraged to invest in local sports facilities, ensuring that basketball courts become as commonplace as football pitches. Let's rally to build a strong foundation for basketball in the UK, ensuring that the sport receives the support it rightfully deserves at every level. Only then can we truly harness the collective strength found in unity and propel UK basketball to new heights.

This afternoon I presented the research poster of one of our former graduate students and LaTech Assistant Softball Coach, Tyler Krobetzky, titled "Relationships between lower extremity power and bat velocity and exit velocity in collegiate softball players" at the NSCA National Conference in Baltimore, MD. This study showed significant relationships between bilateral lower body peak power and bilateral lower body peak power normalized for lean body mass recorded from force plates and increased bat and exit velocity of female softball players. Furthermore, while hitting, lateral force of the stride (front) foot recorded with a force plate in the frontal plane was significantly related to bat velocity. #softball #power #batvelocity #exitvelocity #sportscience #sportsperformance

Brittney Griner's decision to play basketball in Russia highlights a significant issue: the pay gap. This isn't limited to sports but spans tech, entertainment, and more. This isn't just about unequal pay; it's about how deeply ingrained disparities affect Black, Indigenous, Queer, Trans, and other women of color because we encounter even greater challenges due to intersecting identities and invisible labor. Many of us continue to champion equal pay and benefits to create more inclusive workplaces. Every day, we try to create more equitable society. It's time for those in positions of power to take decisive action and confront these challenges head-on.
Brittney Griner cites the pay gap as her motivation for wanting to play basketball in Russia. On February 17, 2022, the WNBA athlete landed at the Sheremetyevo International Airport, set to play for the Russian Premiere League's UMMC Ekaterinburg during the off-season for the WNBA, granting Griner the opportunity to earn more than with the WNBA. Though the following events had been widely publicized, the reason she was there in the first place has garnered attention. Read more here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/g4TNXJND #AFROTECH #WNBA #BrittneyGriner

The 'Representing the Professional Athlete' short course at University of Miami School of Law is truly unlike any other! RTPA met every day during lunch hour for the past week, with longer class meetings on Friday and Saturday. Our assignments focused on the fiduciary relationship between athletes and their agents, fund mismanagement, endorsement deals, proper drafting of representation agreements, and more. Overall, a wonderful class that I would recommend to any student interested in sports law! #MiamiLaw #SportsLaw
