Living a rural lifestyle, Farming is a way of life. Ask anyone doing it, if they could have their time again, would they do something different, and they will tell you that they could never see themselves doing anything else. Often they are ‘married’ to their properties as livestock and crops need tending to daily. For families on the more remote properties and stations, life is very different, particularly when it comes to education. School of the Air is an institution of the Outback. Established in Alice Springs in 1951, it remains the only way that young children living in isolated areas can start their education while living at home. The two-way radio is now replaced by the internet and video feeds and the students get to see their classmates face to face a few times a year at mini schools and sports days. With mum or a governess leading the way, they work through the curriculum at home, dialing into their virtual classroom at set times throughout the day. It’s a big commitment, the pre and post-class prep, the increasing diversity of the curriculum, navigating the associated technology, and the never-ending battle for reliable internet service and data. It is putting more and more pressure on home tutors, especially those who are teaching children of multiple ages. Most parents say the effort is worth it, including the opportunity to keep their family together, the lifelong bonds created among the small band of students and parents, and the opportunity for the children to enjoy the other experiences a bush upbringing provides. Now retired after a lifetime trying to improve farm safety! Ex-HSE; Douglas Bomford Trust Sec; IOSH Rural Ind Gp Chair and IOSH Chiltern Cttee; APSE Consultant Trainer [t/a AP(HSC)]; ran Beds Farmers Training Gp etc
“Active supervision” advocated to protect #children on #farms - It would certainly contribute to improving #childsafety and #farmsafety , so give it a read, think about it, and share it. #FarmSafetyHasNoBorders Don’t forget our own legislation though - No child under 13 on (working) tractors or equipment, and assess suitability to cope with tasks (and emergency situations) beyond that age. See Health and Safety Executive guidance: https://lnkd.in/e3SU_eUQ
Children living on or visiting farms need a helping hand to remain safe. Active supervision ensures children remain in sight and within arm's reach and involves staying engages, anticipating potential risks, and guiding children as they navigate the farm environment. Watch the video below - the team at Clovelly Dairy in Tasmania have some great guidelines in place to keep children engaged and learning about dairy farming in a safe and responsible way. #nationalfarmsafetyweek #insafehands #farmsafety

Last week our Regional Adviser Duncan Anderson Margetts was invited to speak at a Farmer Workshop for Somerset Local Nature Recovery Strategy. With farmers playing an integral role in shaping the scheme, the event was aimed at highlighting the benefit of the LRNS scheme across the county, what progress has been made to date and what will come next. It was also an opportunity to show how farmers how nature recovery can work on a commercial farm business, with Duncan providing an insight into some of the most frequently asked questions about such schemes. #landscape #naturerecovery #farmers #landowners #farmmanagement #landmanagement #LRNS

REALTOR® at Parks Lakeside | Empowering Homeowners, Relocating Buyers, and Equine Enthusiasts with Personalized Real Estate Solutions in Sumner County, TN and Surrounding Areas
🌾 Preserving Our Agricultural Heritage in Sumner County 🌾 As a graduate with a Bachelor's in Agriculture, I'm passionate about maintaining Sumner County's agricultural integrity. Growing up in this community, I value the balance between suburban amenities and preserving our open land and rural charm. This is an area where I differ from many in the real estate industry. While I support local builders and believe in responsible new construction, I stand firmly against overdevelopment without restrictions. Personal Example: One of my most nostalgic roads is Long Hollow Pike. I drove it every day in high school, and it’s the road that has connected me to almost every local horse barn I've ever loved and ridden at. I don't want that beautiful main country road to end up needing to expand prematurely due to more and more subdivisions popping up. Sure, there are already some subdivisions on Long Hollow Pike, and they’re great, but they’re also spread out. I don’t want to see horse farms and cattle operations being encroached upon by developers. It's also a hazard for the animals, but that's a whole other Ted Talk. Earlier this year, a colleague told me, "More development means more opportunity for you to make money." This made my blood boil!! News Flash: I don’t just sell "houses"; I sell "communities." Our balance of suburban amenities and rural charm is what makes Sumner County special. We need responsible development that respects our agricultural roots. Why Attend the Public Hearing? Resolution 2024-01 proposes a Rural Preservation (RP) zoning district for Sumner County, allowing ONE dwelling per FIVE acres. This is crucial for protecting our agricultural areas. 📅 Date: Tuesday, May 21 | 5:00PM 📍 Location: Sumner County Admin. Bldg. Bethel Brown Commission Chambers 355 N. Belvedere Dr, Gallatin Let's support this resolution to keep our agricultural heritage intact. Your voice matters! 📢 Share this post and contact your local representatives to support Resolution 2024-01. 🌾 Preserving our agricultural lands is my mission. Let’s protect our heritage for future generations. #sumnercounty #responsibledevelopment #agriculture #ruralpreservation #communityfirst #sustainablegrowth #keepitrural #AgCommunity

Spotlight on Farm Safety Week: Prioritising Health and Safety at Sovereign Turf This year’s Farm Safety Week focuses on the crucial issue of near misses, an ongoing challenge in our industry. While we offer incentives for reporting near misses, we recognize there's still much more to be done. That's why we fully support this cause and are eager to adopt new strategies and trials to enhance near miss reporting. To mark Farm Safety Week 2024, we interviewed our newest recruit, Dylan, who started as a Farm Apprentice just two weeks ago. With health and safety training fresh on his mind, here's what he had to say: "The training was really informative and easy to understand, with thorough assessments for every risk. I was surprised by just how much there was. I thought Sovereign Turf's training was amazing. It's only when you get out working on the farm that you fully understand why these dos and don'ts are so important." Dylan's training included the mandatory videos, presentations, and documents in the office. He also received extensive verbal safety briefings from our Farm Director, Jack, on potential dangers. Dylan is being mentored by Richard, one of our seasoned farmhands, who emphasises constant vigilance to prevent near misses. Dylan shared: "Richard is always emphasising checking my surroundings to prevent near misses. Before I do anything, Richard asks me to stop and says, 'Look around; is anyone around? Keep looking around. Check again.' Near miss learning is fresh and new to me, and it’s at the forefront of everything I am doing.” Hearing real-life stories about when things have gone wrong has also impacted Dylan. He said, "Your body and your life are more important than a tractor. Hearing stories about what's happened to others changes your approach and makes you take things seriously." Dylan's Top Tips: Always Ask: Don’t be afraid to ask a manager how to do something the right way. Rehear & Replay: Constantly replay what you’ve learned and heard. Always double-check with your mentor—can I do this? Sense-checking helps reduce accidents. Dylan's early journey in farming highlights the importance of taking a moment to stop and check. Let's all take a leaf out of his book and prioritise safety in every task we undertake. #FarmSafetyWeek #healthandsafety #farming #staysafe #farmlife #agriculture #safetyfirst

I know Brooks Lamb, the author this article, and we work together in preserving working family farms. He talks about his family farm in middle Tennessee, but here in the eastern part of our state we are going through the same issues. If you want to know more about how you can keep local east TN farmland productive please reach out to me.

State of Florida Purchases Development Rights from Three Large Landowner, protecting over 2,200 acres !!! Owners of three farms have signed deals with the state, totaling nearly $9 million, to restrict future residential and commercial development, Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson announced Monday. The deals involve the state purchasing conservation easements, which allow landowners to continue using their land for such things as farming while agreeing not to develop the property. The purchases, made through the state’s Rural and Family Lands Protection Program, are for easements on the 707-acre K-Rocker Ranch in Polk County, at a cost of $3.2 million; the 998-acre Los Niños Farm in Putnam County, at a cost of $1.798 million; and the 525-acre Kuder Ranch in Polk County, at a cost of $3.9 million. “With the preservation of these three ranches and their over 2,200 acres of productive agricultural land, in addition to the more than 36,000 acres we’ve permanently preserved in the last year, we are working to protect Florida’s valuable agricultural lands as efficiently and effectively as possible – and before it’s too late,” Simpson said in a prepared statement. #Florida #land #conservation #Rural #Development https://lnkd.in/e8CywUcY

Check out this must-read article in Country Guide - the dad-daughter relationship is emerging as one of agriculture’s greatest strengths! “Maybe it used to be a struggle for Dad to stop being Dad and become a business partner. especially if it’s his “little girl” that’s stepping up to take over the farm. Sometimes it still is, but on a growing number of farms, dads and daughters are not only getting the job done, they can also teach some lessons in best practices to dads and sons. Keeping each other accountable is very important because sometimes it’s easy to let things get put on the back burner when you’re dealing with a relative. My dad is someone I see all the time. But a farm operation is a business, and this is my business partner that I’m working with so I want to treat that relationship in a professional manner.” https://lnkd.in/gNHDSnPr #cdnag #familyfarm #farmfamilies #farmsuccession #farmtransition #farmmanagement #managementmonday
