The scheme has been broadened to include individuals from all under-represented and under-served groups. It was established as a scientific fact that diverse agencies and public relations teams make better decisions and are better able to represent the public that they serve by Dr Larissa Grunig in the 1980s. The issue took more than 30 years to rise up the industry agenda. It's another example of the lag between theory and practice in public relations. Sarah Waddington CBE CDir ChartPR and I have spent ten years studying industry data related to diversity. Two critical areas require an intervention to shift public relations from an elite to a representative practice. 1) Widening entry requirements and recruiting more widely. This is the intervention addressed by Tfl and similar initiatives 2) Supporting mid-career practitioners from diverse backgrounds in securing management qualifications. This is the intervention addressed by Socially Mobile It will almost certainly take another 30 years to address this issue, but thanks to Matt Brown, Victoria Harrison-Cook MBE and the TfL team for continuing Stuart Ross' legacy and driving this critical intervention.

Who knew I’d be touching account management, influencer relations, traditional media, and event planning? As a Black man in PR, it’s meant being on the front lines of industry change. I‘ve never let a job title dictate my impact and you shouldn’t either - intern to VP. Here are my favorite moments of 2024 so far: • Consulting for brands like Homegoods and f'real for how to cater upcoming campaigns to Gen Z • Receiving the PR Pro Rising To The Top award from the Black Tech Public Relations Society • Hosting my first-ever audio event for The PR Habitat • Reading Brooke Govert’s letter of rec for the ADCOLOR Conference and Awards Futures program 🥲 I leave this advice for the next batch of PR interns. About 12,157,876 minutes ago the career we celebrate today came into focus. While my classes at NYU sought to prepare me for marketing and international business, my internship drew me to PR's more nuanced approach to engaging and persuading audiences, with the artful dance between PR and news media taking center stage. So many years later, I find myself lamenting the current state of that vital dance partner. ❌ Newsroom staff numbers have shrunk by 26% since 2008. ❌ Digital outlets, once heralded as the new face of media, have been gutted. ❌ Worst of all, far too many of the stellar reporters I once pitched have been laid off. Sure, PR firms are eager to hire journalists to help beef up team skills and credibility, but this is a short-term solution to a long-term challenge that MUST be addressed. For PR to be a healthy and sustainable career choice, journalism and media must thrive, as well. Let's face it .. strong and vibrant news media are even more important for the well-being of democracy. So if there were candles to blow out in celebration of World PR Day, my rather self-serving wish would be to see a revitalization of the kind of journalism that informs, educates, and inspires. #WorldPRDay #Journalism #PRCareer #NewsMedia #BringBackJournalism

Journalists say PR folks don't get them well enough. PR folks say journalists are inaccessible. Caught in the middle, corporate communicators push both sides to prioritize their side of the story. The empathy gap in the comms sector is no secret. Can industry exchange programs be the answer to bridging this gap? Think summer camp for professionals: An immersive, salaried program where journalists, agency folks and corporate communicators swap workplaces for a few weeks, to gain a more realistic understanding of the opposite fence. We are excited to welcome two new undergraduate student interns who will be helping us behind the scenes this semester. This morning we'd like to introduce our new Marketing and Communications Intern Sam Bohmer! Sam is a junior and he will be working with the Center's Communications and Events Manager Kelsey Faulkner to gain marketing, digital communication, and event support experience. What is your major?  Double Major in Public Policy and Journalism with a concentration in Advertising/Public Relations What do you hope to gain from your time at the Wood Center?  I hope to gain some new knowledge about the real estate industry. What would you like to do after graduation?  After graduation I would like to work in either recruiting, some sort of marketing/pr role, or as a policy researcher/analyst. I am open to a lot of different options. What is the best advice you’ve ever gotten?  The best advice I’ve ever gotten is to always say “I’ll find out” instead of “I don’t know” when you don’t know the answer to something. What is your favorite television show?  Sex and the City What food could you eat everyday and never get tired of? I could eat roasted broccoli every day. What is your biggest pet peeve?  My biggest pet peeve is inconsistency. If you could have dinner with anyone dead or alive, who would you choose and why?  My dream dinner guest would probably be Taylor Swift. My first job was as a sub-editorial intern in a monthly magazine. One of the key things that I learned in my job was just how important paying attention to detail is. Seriously. They aren't kidding when they mention 'detail-oriented' in their JDs. A good copy can fail simply because of a missing oxford comma. If you are still in J-school or gearing to enter the media and communications industry, master the skill of being obsessed with details. Because the untrained eyes of your target audience notices when those details are missing; even if they can't quite put a finger on what's wrong. The most creative people in the world are the most anally retentive.

I just spoke to a friend's daughter, a rising college senior about to begin a PR agency internship. She asked some great questions, one of which was who do I think are the best PR people and why (their backgrounds). I've been in the industry a fairly long time and have worked with lots of comms people--some great, some good, some average, some not-so-average. The best PR people I've worked with include two former segment producers for local network TV affiliates, a former broadcast business reporter, a former ski instructor and a college soccer player who studied accounting. Why do I think they're the best? It's because they know how to quickly craft concise and compelling stories, and they're incredibly pragmatic. #PR #publicrelations #careers

Enjoyed leading a lunch and learn session with our interns last week. We’ve got more than a dozen interns this summer spread across our four offices statewide. Even though our interns won’t be stepping in front of a news conference mic any time soon, sharing the value of a strong public affairs program is so important. Much like how recruitment is the job of everyone in an organization, your public affairs program is impacted by every person in your org. You may be writing the releases, but your colleagues often determine the content. Your co-workers will help generate positive content or unhelpful news depending on their relationship to the department. What your employees share about their feelings on their workplace shapes the public’s perception. How your officers conduct traffic stops impacts your department’s reputation. Your ability to get timely information out in a crisis impacts if people find your team reliable. Every staff member plays a part in managing and protecting your org’s reputation.
