We have come such a long way. I will be the first to admit I am not perfect; I make mistakes and know my weaknesses.
But looking back on some of the work Northamptonshire Sport has done through 2023 and writing it up into our EDI update (found here and different to NBCT article) it shows we are making progress. https://lnkd.in/eh5ZTmmW
As an individual, organisation, sector, county we have so much more to do but we are making progress.
Ending our working year on a positive note, here’s the full story on the Strategic Partner of the Year award at the Northamptonshire Black Communities Together Conference 2023

In honor of #HispanicHeritageMonth, we're re-sharing this 2022 article from the Duke University School of Medicine's Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, which takes a look at the terms “Hispanic,” “Latino/a” & “Latinx”—what they mean, why they matter, and how a few Duke team members from these communities feel about the terms.

It is an uncomfortable truth in 2024 that we still tend to pre-qualify who deserves our support and respect based on meaningless factors.
Even the strongest self-proclaiming feminists among us have some bias around "which women".
I'm not even (in this instance) speaking about the intersectional misalignment that exists - although that is a very real and significant challenge - but even within our "section" we perform assessments as to who is more appropriate.
You've likely seen thought pieces and research that highlight the association between traditionally masculine traits and "good leadership". I believe those associations, even subconsiously, go further to the interests, industries and investments that we have historically seen as more "male" and so more serious, more worthy.
I've written an opinion piece on Medium that explores why we automatically give more space and respect to topics such as Sports and still hold with suspicion the validity of giving time to Beauty, Fashion and other more feminine endeavours.

Those which are stereotypically associated with women are seen as more superficial and vain, those with men are seen as virtuous and collaborative. This spills over into who we want to hold up as a leader or a role-model so my ask is....stop labelling sports fans as "better than" all the rest because it is just another form of continued (albeit sometimes subtle) misogyny.
Broaden your acceptance to all aspects of a person if you are truly committed to diversity and equality.

This article is a must-read for understanding and eliminating the insidious cultural biases perpetuating racism. The recent women's college basketball championship highlighted how Black and white athletes are portrayed differently. Despite South Carolina's victory and the achievement of Black women and girls, the media focused on the defeated Iowa team and their star, Caitlin Clark, who were mostly white. This relegation of the true champions to the sidelines of their triumph is a powerful example of systemic racism in our media.
These biases are invisible to white people until we have someone stick us into the shoes of our fellow people of color. #racism#equity#diversityequityandinclusion#antiracism

Drs. Christopher and Dafina Allen, an inspiring African American husband and wife duo, are making history in Saginaw, Michigan. They are uniting their medical practices under one roof, breaking barriers, and redefining healthcare dynamics in the city. Their joint practice exemplifies the power of partnership, aiming to inspire and provide exceptional services to their community.
The NCAA's mishandling of the 2021 March Madness tournaments laid bare the stark discrepancies between men's and women's collegiate basketball. Despite years of pleading for reform from women's basketball leaders, the NCAA continued to prioritize men's basketball, relegating the women's game to a secondary status.
From the delayed and disjointed planning process to the blatant disparities in resources, the treatment of women athletes was a clear reflection of institutional neglect. While the men enjoyed fully equipped weight rooms and self-serve buffets, the women were left with inadequate facilities and pre-packaged meals.
Even COVID-19 testing protocols differed significantly, with the men receiving daily PCRs while the women were subjected to antigen tests, leading to numerous false positives and disruptions.
These inequities weren't merely oversights; they were systemic failures perpetuated by budget imbalances and a disregard for the value of women's sports. The NCAA's own data revealed a staggering difference in spending between the men's and women's tournaments, highlighting the deep-rooted disparities within the organization.
The outcry sparked by Sedona Prince's viral video was not just about a single incident; it was a demand for long-overdue change. Women athletes deserve equitable treatment, investment, and respect. There are moments when we look back and say this was the beginning. As those moments continue, let's hold those accountable to move the inadequacies to the level that is not only right, but equal.

Arsenal Women are making history, with an all-female team running the grounds and tech operations in the upcoming North London Derby on 3 March. This momentous occasion is a testament to the club's commitment to driving change in women's sport. The club partnered with the WSL, Women in Football and the Grounds Management Association to make this happen.
It's inspiring to see women and organisations collectively come together as a driving force and taking action for the betterment of women's sport, both on and off the pitch. Change is more powerful when we come together to achieve our goals. Strength is in numbers. Power is in unity.
This isn't a trend. This is the present. This is the future. Women in sport. Women in business. Women leading the way in sport, business, and society. Let's continue to support and empower each other to create a better future for all. #WomenInSport#GenderEquality#DiversityAndInclusion

We’re proud to announce an all-female team will run our grounds and tech operations for the very first time in the North London Derby on March 3. They will be joined by senior female leads overseeing policing, operations and stewarding at the game.
We’re proud to see the consistent level of support for our women's team this season. The sustainable growth of the game relies on continuing to nurture that audience, and inspiring a new generation of young girls and boys into the game.
As Women’s History Month gets underway, we hope that our female role models – from the pitch to the control room – provide that inspiration, and demonstrate the different opportunities for people to get into the game at all levels.

THIS! Black women hold up half the world. We are pillars in PK-16 education - more so than any other demographic. However, Black women are chronically underrepresented in system-level and senior-level leadership in PK-12 school districts across the country, despite the increasing number of Black and brown students in public schools. It's time to create space for Black women. More space. More opportunity. So we can create more impact. #createopportunity#opendoors#letBlackwomenlead#makespaceforBlackwomen#equityinleadership

✨ Reflections on Diversity in Clinical Research: A Black Woman's Perspective
As a 💜 Black Women In Clinical Research ® 💜 , my journey has been illuminated by the profound importance of diversity in our field. Diversifying the workforce isn't just about optics—it's about recognizing that diverse perspectives lead to more inclusive and effective research outcomes.
One lesson that stands out in my experience is the vital connection between workforce diversity and patient population diversity. By ensuring that our teams reflect the communities we serve, we can better understand their unique needs and challenges, ultimately leading to more equitable healthcare solutions.
Moreover, it's essential to acknowledge and learn from the injustices and unethical practices of past clinical research experiments. We must confront this history head-on, ensuring that we uphold the highest ethical standards and prioritize the well-being of all participants.
The reminder from the FDA regarding the importance of including ethnicity in the approval of new drugs and devices serves as a crucial call to action. It reinforces the necessity of diverse representation in all aspects of clinical research, from study design to participant recruitment and beyond.
I'm heartened by the rising number of site owners in the Black and Brown communities. Their presence underscores the importance of community involvement and ownership in clinical research. We understand the significance of this movement and should strive to provide unwavering support and backing to these emerging leaders.
In sharing my experience, I hope to inspire others to join me in advocating for greater diversity and inclusion in clinical research. Together, we can create a more equitable and impactful healthcare landscape for all.
