**Reflecting on True Observance this Memorial Day** As we mark #Memorial Day, institutions like the Michigan Supreme Court and the Michigan Court of Appeals honor it by closing their doors. While the gesture is appreciated, it sparks a broader reflection on the essence of what it means to *truly observe* this day. Memorial Day is more than a moment of acknowledgment—it's a profound commemoration of sacrifice, courage, and the often-painful costs of defending principles we say that we hold dear. This commemoration resonates not just on battlefields but in battles of a different kind—like that of a wife fighting tirelessly against a wrongful conviction. Her struggle mirrors the relentlessness of a soldier; both fighting formidable adversaries, whether in combat or in a courtroom. Her disappointment, faced with systemic failings decade after decade, echoes the trials of those who've laid down their lives for justice and liberty. As we reflect today, let us hope that if her husband's case ever reaches the higher courts, it encounters a judiciary as committed to 'observing' the deep-seated flaws and injustices of our legal system as it is to honoring this day. May it be an opportunity to right what has been wronged and to truly honor the sacrifices made—in every form. Today, let us remember that true observance demands profound engagement and a relentless quest for justice, echoing the sacrifices of those we honor on Memorial Day. #sacrifice #memorialday #miwrongfulconviction #freedomforALL
The Michigan Supreme Court and Michigan Court of Appeals (all locations) are closed today in observance of #MemorialDay.
