Over the years, I've often likened fundraising to gardening! 🌱🌻 Fundraising is like tending to a garden of donors. You can't force them to give, but you can create and nurture an environment that encourages their generosity. 🌳🌷 A gardener can't make a plant grow, but they can provide the right conditions (the right soil, the right place in the garden, the right food, etc.) for growth to happen naturally. 👩🌾 Like a good gardener, you too can create the right conditions to unlock the generosity of your charity's donors. You can understand donors' needs and respond to them. You can build effective relationships with them. You can tell stories that resonate with their desire to impact the world. You can ask at the right time, for the right amount, in the right way... and more! At Olmanyara tilil,as part of our afforestation activities, we go beyond just tree planting; there is a need to ensure that trees planted are taken care of and communities are engaged and educated. In partnership with local groups, we have set up a total of ten tree nurseries that cover four wards within Kieni East. These nurseries offer a steady supply of commercially important and indigenous trees that are suitable within the area. By involving the community in management of the nurseries, we are giving them ownership of their local environment. One of our strategies is increasing awareness and educating the community about the objective of managed replanting and the need to conserve forests, the long term benefits of which are immense. This makes it sure that tree planting is not an isolated one time effort but an ongoing commitment to regeneration of deforested land. Further, our programs have also created improved economic activities for the local people. Glasbren regenerates land and communities through food growing and nature education. Modern industrial farming is intensifying environmental damage and exacerbating climate change and food insecurity. Glasbren are showing that smaller scale, sustainable farms led by local communities offer a better way, addressing both local and global challenges while promoting mental and physical health. Glasbren recently expanded to a 134-acre farm, but they lack capacity to fully capitalise on this opportunity. Glasbren will use our funding to hire a Social Enterprise Coordinator to enhance fundraising, grow volunteers and develop partnerships, including with those already queuing up to partner. This will help them to scale their operations sustainably, fully utilise their new site, and increase their social and environmental impact. On Wednesday, I spent an excellent evening at a #fundraising event organised by Woop Woop and Tir Pontypridd. TP are a #community group aiming to raise funds for the purchase of land in the Pontypridd area; land that will be used for #biodiversity and #wellbeing purposes. Also attended by Tir Natur – a #charity created to purchase and #rewild land in bio-depleted uplands of Mid #Wales – we watched the excellent @kneppestate documentary and contemplated the possibilities for returning a greater balance to our use of land, our consideration of #nature and the utilisation of natural resources. The Q&A session was particularly inspirational. I am of course, horribly biased. This is a subject that is close to my heart and colours my thinking. I absolutely believe that with a little #creativity, #imagination and #commitment, #businesses can play an incredibly active part in both the #dialogue and in making things happen. As businesses we make choice after choice that affect our local and wider #communities, with decision making that is often accidentally naïve. To broaden clear opportunities, we just need that heady mix of the right crowd, the right ideas and constructive #conversation (leading to expert #conservation) to nudge/push/pull/drag (delete as applicable) things in the right direction.
