New blog post! https://lnkd.in/ek6Eu8iN Welcome to part one of a series I'll be doing on #understandingsuicide to help clinicians #buildconfidence in working with those suffering from #suicidalideationsandrelatedbehaviors. From my blog: "Suicide remains a national and international crisis. The World Health Organization (2018) estimated that over 800,000 people die by suicide each year. In the US in 2022, nearly 50,000 people died by suicide. That equated to 1 death every 11 minutes. A great deal of resources and funding goes into researching who is dying by suicide and in creating suicide prevention initiatives based on identifying risk factors and improving access to care. However, these efforts fall short in helping clinicians feel confident in working with someone struggling with suicidal ideations and related behaviors." In this series, I talking about theory, interventions, differentiating between self-harm and suicide, conducting risks assessment, representations in the media, and more. Stay tuned! Want to learn more? I'll be hosting an in-person CE workshop on this topic in Tucson in Fall 2024. Message me to be added to my email list. Out of state? Message me to discuss the options of bringing this workshop to your team.

This month with all the discussions on Suicide prevention and awareness, I am reminded of my own personal health struggles and how important community is to my mental health. As a kidney transplant patient, when I am nervous about risk-taking or change, I lean into it simply by visualizing past experiences that were scary to me. I remind myself that if I could do something difficult in the past, I can do it again. I never regret leaning into change - and neither will you. #patientvoice #patientadvocate #patientisourpurpose #patientengagement #patientdesign #patientadvocate #patiententrepreneur #patientpartnership #healthcareburnout #physicianburnout #nurseburnout #medicalassociation #medicalspecialties #associationaccelerator #empathy

VA prioritizes preventing suicide among all Veterans, including those who may never seek care within the VA health care system. Veterans and their caregivers face unique challenges, but they don't have to navigate them alone. VA Suicide Prevention is built upon three core tenants: suicide is preventable, suicide prevention requires a public health approach and everyone plays a role. Today, I am reminded that we are all human. Physicians and patients. This is an important topic to me, as I reflect upon the growing mental health crisis impacting the medical industry. Let’s face it...we all want to be cared for and to connect with one another. Imagine the progress that can be made in reducing Physician suicide rate, which is 2x the general population, if we all lean in, drive change, and help one another when times get tough.
