A program at Novant Health allows volunteers to share their appreciation for veterans receiving care. Alaine Patton visits weekly to visit veterans at Novant Health Matthews Medical Center. “I was never in the service myself,” she shared with one of the patients, “but my late husband was in the Marine Corps for 20 years, so it’s kind of why I do this.” Volunteers give their well wishes, share stories and thank veterans for their service. As veterans transition to civilian life, they encounter a complex web of challenges where many needs arise simultaneously. New research from the Network for Nonprofit and Social Impact at Northwestern University (NNSI) finds that there needs to be a set formula for veteran-centered agencies to follow to meet these needs in successive order. Our two-part blog series on veterans' care explores the importance of a comprehensive and well-sequenced approach in addressing the diverse and interconnected challenges faced by veterans. In the first article, discover how a strategic sequencing of care can make a significant impact on veterans' well-being. https://lnkd.in/dHx6ENvc

Holding up the ideals of American democracy by connecting people with their local government one day at a time.
Of all the things I did in my military career, transitioning to life as a civilian was probably the hardest. Aside from the normal career and culture shift challenges and opportunities, navigating things like health insurance and other systems you've never had to worry about can be daunting. If you're a transitioning service member or just looking to understand your benefits and resources better, check out this VA Summit!
Hello friends, colleagues, and fellow veterans! This is a reminder that we are just one week away from an amazing event! The 12th Annual VA Summit on Behavioral Health is focused on “The Veterans Journey,” which combines federal, state, and nonprofit approaches to coordinated whole health. This summit will also guide attendees through the process of accessing services, support, and much more for our military community. It will be our first in-person event in four years! We invite our community to come, observe, engage, and find answers to all your needs. There is still time to register! And we hope to see you all there! #VAPugetSound #NineLineVS #UWForefront #CohenClinics #KingCounty #TaskForce12 #WDVA #VTSC #PuyallupTribe

One nice thing about being a US military veteran is that you might get free healthcare for life. Problem is, the VA would rather chuck a bunch of pills at vets than cover the cost of psychedelic therapy. Fortunately, changes may finally be coming. Now that President Biden has signed off on a new 2024 budget, the VA has $20 million to fund its own psychedelic clinical trials. To be clear, this kind of research has been going on for some time. There are already at least 8 psychedelic therapy trials happening across the country through the VA. But so far, it’s all been philanthropically funded. With this law, Congress is pushing the VA to put some skin in the game. They’ll focus on MDMA and psilocybin to start. Last December, the Department of Defense got authorization to study psychedelics in active-duty service members. Now, the vets are getting taken care of. That just leaves everyday civilians. So, uhh, which government agency would like to pick up the tab for the rest of us?

Adjutant/Past Commander/Department Service Officer at Disabled American Veterans Jackson County Chapter 8
Currently, a veteran must contact the VA within 72 hours of receiving non-VA emergency care; otherwise VA may deny payment for these services even if the veteran is eligible for treatment. Veterans suffering medical emergencies should not have to worry about whether VA will deny coverage or refuse payment because of administrative notification time requirements. H.R. 3644, the Addressing Care Timelines (ACT) for Veterans Act would provide an additional 24-hour period for veterans to inform the VA when receiving care at a non-VA facility under the Veterans Community Care Program. DAV supports H.R. 3644, in accordance with DAV Resolution No. 205, which calls for the improvement of emergency care benefits for service-connected veterans: specifically, for VA to provide a more liberal interpretation of the law governing payment for emergency care and reimbursement to veterans who have received emergency care at non-VA facilities. We ask all DAV members and supporters to contact their representatives and urge them to co-sponsor and support H. R. 3644, the ACT for Veterans Act. #DAVCAN #ACT4VETS

I am so proud of and gratified by this work. VA and VHA are working to improve services for the #Veterans they serve, a rapidly changing group with needs different than Veterans of prior conflict eras because of the changing nature of war. This study shows how VHA can encourage more Veterans to #ChooseVA, for example, by shifting the culture of delivering healthcare to model the experience people get with non-VA providers, continuing to develop the inclusivity of care available, and letting Vets know how qualified VHA specialists are. #VeteransHelpingVeterans
