Early-career female scientists frequently have to navigate graduate school, postdocs, tenure, and beyond while coping with unsupportive environments, bias, and life circumstances that may affect their professional path. In the clip below, I share some highlights of my story as a female scientist.

“Being selected as a Hanna Gray Fellow means that I'll have the freedom to pursue the scientific questions that fascinate me, without worrying about whether they are fundable, during the crucial early stages of my career,” says Grant King, one of our newest Hanna Gray Fellows. “I'm studying a special type of DNA that, while inside of cells, exists outside of chromosomes. Usually, this type of DNA often doesn't last very long. I'm focusing on an exception to this rule, an "extrachromosomal" DNA that has survived for millions of years. I am interested in understanding how cells have changed to tolerate and maybe even benefit from this unique DNA passenger,” explains Grant. The Hanna Gray Fellows program supports early career scientists as they launch careers in academic science, and equip them to recruit, mentor, and inspire future generations. Fellows join a cohort of peers and receive funding up to $1.5 million over the course of up to eight years. Carbon to Sea is excited to announce our 2024 Research Fellowship Program cohort. From a competitive, diverse pool of applicants, our five research fellows stood out as outstanding candidates with expertise across a range of disciplines. The goal of our Fellowship program is to help create a public, living picture of the sector’s progress, as well as inform Carbon to Sea’s own R&D roadmap and future investments.
