At the end of March, RESI South 2024 will convene in Atlanta and is expected to bring together more than 500 bioscience and medtech entrepreneurs with premier investors, family offices, and key executives. The event, the result of a partnership between Life Science Nation and the Southeast Life Sciences, will highlight the innovative start-ups in the Southeastern region and connect them with early-stage investors. We spoke to Georgia Bio CEO Maria Thacker and NC Life Sciences Organization President Laura Gunter, about the growth of biotech in the southeast region, the upcoming RESI South 2024 conference, and how it expected to help fill a gap in access to capital for companies in the region. https://lnkd.in/gwyN_Nx4

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of attending the Road2 Haifa Bioconvergence for Startups event, where Gil Kerbs, who heads our new investments, participated in the VC panel. 🌟 One key message he shared was that when it comes to bio convergence in healthcare (rather uniquely as compared to other areas), there are many companies in which the concern about the potential market is minimal - if your technology to cure a type of cancer actually works, there are minimal concerns about who would buy it. Therefore, when entrepreneurs of such companies approach investors, they need to understand how much time, data, and money it will take to verify and prove their technology, and translate it into a fundable milestones - as that would be the #1 concern of investors. 🎯🔬

Thrilled to speak with two incredible groups this week at Johns Hopkins University to share insights from my work founding Aptabridge Therapeutics, Inc.. I left that night feeling energized and grateful. I was invited to engage with early entrepreneurs and students through the #FastForwardU FUEL Accelerator and a master's-level course titled "The Biotech Enterprise," expertly led by Professor Rudnick. Our discussions covered several essential topics for hard tech founders, like how to identify #innovation, strategies to operationalize it, the macroeconomics of public/private partnerships, and strategies for value creation. Sharing the stage with Evan H., CEO of CurveAssure, is always a highlight. Our unique perspectives, coming from therapeutics versus medical devices, bring out depth and richness to these critical discussions that always leave me with new ideas. After an already engaging late class, several students stayed back to ask more questions. Their excitement was so infectious that we had to get a photo. It's clear the entrepreneurial spirit is thriving, especially in #biotech and #lifesciences, and I'm happy to be a part of this vibrant ecosystem. Key takeaways: 1. Identify the whats and whos that deeply energize you. Seek them out. 2. Commit to hard, focused work on what truly matters. Trust the process. 3. Proactively build and nurture your network. Best to build the well before your thirsty. #Entrepreneurship #JohnsHopkins #Networking #StartupLife #FFU #HappyInnovating Don't miss the FUEL cohort's Demo Day on May 3rd at Johns Hopkins! It's a fantastic opportunity to see these impressive entrepreneurs in action. https://lnkd.in/e-MDNVVH

We’re delighted to have Pam Garside, chair of Cambridge Angels with us this week. Pam gives us an introduction to Cambridge Angels and their focus areas - #DeepTech #AI #SpaceTech #DigitalHealth #HealthTech #BioTech. Interestingly, members attract deals. Pam alone receives 2 decks a day. In total they see 1000 deals per year, expertly triaged by deal sorcerer Emmi Nicholl. Interesting candidates are then offered the opportunity to pitch. The members invest as individuals, not as a collective fund, and within the group – one investor will usually be a deal lead and may take a seat on the board. It’s a really engaging way of entrepreneurs funding entrepreneurs. Some of their portfolio companies include: Paragraf®, Arecor Therapeutics plc, Privitar, abcam, 10to8, Arachnys, FLUSSO LIMITED, Unlikely AI, Monument Therapeutics, Kalium Health, Qureight, Spotta. Pam shares her priorities as chair of the Cambridge Angels ‘network’: 1. ‘Don’t screw it up’ in a difficult market environment 2. Add diversity (a challenge for the UK Investor Community) 3. Raise the profile of depth of expertise of members. We learn about Pam’s unique background, and her journey into investing. And we talk about healthcare and how AI and automation is revolutionising the sector but requires caution – it’s not an area to ‘move fast and break things’ as Mark Zuckerberg advises!
