A farewell visit to Strathclyde Business School and the city of my birth, Glasgow. A mix of MBA and Masters students heard me talk about the consultancy market and how to source opportunities in consulting firms using Uncle Don’s tips and tricks. Q&A followed: we discussed the best entry level for PhDs, a career pivot into consultancy for lawyers, and the attractions of consulting in the Middle East. 🔶 Seeking Industry Projects for Creating Better Business Griffith Program 🔶 As part of their final year, Griffith University business students completing the new Mountaintop course 3103GBS Creating Better Business will form into multi-disciplinary student consulting teams to work on live projects for industry clients. There is an opportunity for organisations ranging from Start-ups, SME’s, large corporates, not-for-profits and government organisations to apply and register an Industry Project for student consulting teams to kick-off in Trimester 2 (starting July 2024). Why do universities produce more research outputs than R&D departments of regular businesses? Short answer: One of the reasons universities deliver more research outputs than organizations’ R&D unit is the autonomy which the former provides. Too many structures and bureaucracy in non-traditional research organizations limits freedom of thought and creativity. When the number of mistakes are associated with annual staff appraisals, it stifles creativity because everyone tries to play safe. Selin Uysal is a recent graduate of our master's program. She now works at Angst+Pfister as a PMO & Corporate Development Specialist. We asked Selin about her experience as a student and how her studies shaped her professional growth. -What motivated you to choose the Master of science in finance - Université de Neuchâtel program for your education? My decision to pursue the Master’s in Finance program at Unine stemmed from a convergence of my prior experience in M&A and the analytical acumen I cultivated during my bachelor's studies in industrial engineering. The program's alignment with the CFA examination structure particularly appealed to me, offering a structured pathway to deepen my financial expertise while aligning with local accounting standards. -How has your degree influenced your career path and opened up opportunities for you? My degree has been instrumental in shaping my career trajectory and unlocking various opportunities. Through comprehensive coursework, I gained a profound understanding of accounting and its applications. Moreover, the guidance and support from professors were instrumental in honing not only my technical proficiency but also essential soft skills such as leadership and effective communication. Shortly after completing my first semester, I secured a working student position at Angst+Pfister AG, where I could immediately apply my newfound knowledge to contribute to accounting and tax-related topics. -Are there any specific professors or courses that have had a significant impact on your education or career development? While all courses significantly impacted my development, I must mention the exceptional mentorship and support provided by Professor Florian Weigert. His dedication to our growth extended beyond the classroom, with continued support during and outside of classes. Professor Weigert's insightful guest lectures and his unique approach to presenting course materials left a lasting impression on me, significantly expanding my vision and contributing to my professional development. -What advice would you give to current or prospective students considering the Master’s in Finance program at Unine? My advice to current and prospective students centers on leveraging its unique offerings to maximize both academic and professional growth. Firstly, I recommend actively engaging in group projects, viewing them as invaluable simulations of real-world business scenarios. Secondly, I encourage them to seize every opportunity to interact with guest lecturers and professors actively. These interactions offer invaluable networking opportunities and a chance to glean insights from seasoned industry professionals.
