16 February 2009… the day I swore my oath to Queen and country and embarked on my life changing endeavour of training at Commando Training Centre Royal Marines I can hear the distant echoing voices declaring “sprog!!” as I type, but anyway… A couple of reflections of lessons learnt 15 years on that I believe apply well to all walks of life 1) Have your own WHY The young man in the phot below had a clear vision of what he wanted and where he was headed This is vital to maintaining perspective in life The journey will evolve and that is to be expected but having a North Star keeps you on track, especially when life puts us face first in boggy ground. Keeps you grounded during good times too 2) Choose wisely your supporting cast in life People enter and exit our lives but having trusted oppos, loving family, an evolving network (not just in career change mode) are key Get mentors that align with your values too. That’s massive and links to the next point… 3) Don’t be the smartest person in the room Lacking relevant knowledge of important practical issues in life wastes time, saps energy and money. It certainly adds to life’s challenges Tap into insights of others who know. They are key to understanding HOW 4) I have always been serious about my endeavours. This helps achieve goals but remember to enjoy it too It is not a dress rehearsal. Life is happening all of the time, don’t take it for granted So crack on but I should have taken a few more phots along the way so I don’t have to rely on one like this to illustrate a thought! Plus it will be good to reflect on WHAT we did along the way…

Erm.....are these guys going to break the all time world record of 29 days?!! 😲 • Well, as with everything in ocean rowing, the answer is; "It's complicated!" 🤔 • Firstly, we're only on day 5. Let's put the banners and flare guns back in the box just for the moment. 😂 • Those that have been furiously checking the YB Tracker may notice that there is an estimated crossing time listed on the leader board. You may also notice two options in the top right; "VMG Start" and "VMG Recent". VMG means velocity made good; so that means movement directly towards Antigua. And switching between two options change the calculations made to the crossing time. 🧮 • VMG Start uses all of the data from the race, right back to the start. VMG recent only uses the last 6 transmissions/pings, which in this case is 24 hours of data. So although the VMG Recent calculations are showing that they will make this crossing in 26 days, that is ONLY based on this last 24 hours when they've had very fast conditions...and these are unlikely to remain constant for the whole race. 🌬️ • That said, it is shaping up to be a very fast year, HMS Oardacious are absolutely smashing it out there...there is absolutely scope for a new all time world record here...but time will tell. 67 days till... ...The 2024 NYC Navy Seal Swim. I am humbled by the support of my efforts to participate and honor the brave men and women who served our great nation, first responders, and firefighters. To date, we have raised $3,675 towards our $5,000 goal. Any support would be greatly appreciated and all proceeds go directly to Navy SEAL Foundation. According to the Department of Defense, military recruiting is down 73% over the last 43 years. In 2022, only the Marines met their overall recruiting goals. The Navy was at 80% of the goal, the Army at 77%, and the Air Force at 89%. The recruiting challenge is two-pronged. First, many of today's applicants don't pass basic fitness, education, drug testing, and other litmus tests. The DoD reports that 77% of applicants are passed over for not meeting minimum standards. Secondly, (my opinion) I don't think parents, guidance counselors, and our current culture do enough to promote the military as a favorable option for high schoolers about to graduate. As I think about military service - my own experience and others I have observed, I ponder why more people don't see the unique life skills training available to nearly every kid graduating. Education benefits. Job training. Leadership. Service to a bigger purpose. Collaboration skills. Travel. Structure. Diversity (in all forms). Accountability. Responsibility. And you get paid for it! Yes, there are severe and dangerous elements in the service of our country. Yet, I think the camaraderie, the uniqueness of the mission, and becoming part of a tribe whose sole purpose is to defend our way of life is heroic - and more significant than any entry-level job one may take out of high school. We at Holidaysfortheheroes.org celebrate these young men and women. And we celebrate them through action by helping them get home for holidays and major life events. If you are on active duty, apply to us to help get you home. If you want to help our young heroes, help us get them home with a tax-deductible donation that we will guarantee 100% of will go towards airline tickets. And, if you are in a position to influence a bright and motivated high schooler to consider the armed forces, know that you might be doing them the biggest favor of their lives. March is B Corps Month, when the global B Corps community joins together to celebrate being a B Corps and to raise awareness of the movement. We became a B Corps two years ago for two reasons: we're a good business and it's good business. Firstly, we think we're a good business - one which cares about more than *just* making money. We do obviously care about making a profit, but not at the expense of our people and/or the planet and it's important to have an external body validate that for us and anyone looking at us. Secondly, it makes commercial sense to be clearly accredited by a third party as the kind of company which has some kind of ethical North Star. Our view is that the people we want inside Sunny Side Up are the kind of people for whom how we behave matters, and that both clients and suppliers feel a bit better about working with us and recommending us because they know they can trust us to do the right thing. #tactics #choreography #precision #upeepz #paf #strike #mission #perfection Philippine Air Force (PAF) in the 2024 Australian PITCH BLACK Air Exercise The PAF is ramping up training as they prepare to acquire 20 or more multi-role fighter jets (Reuters, 20 July 2024 article by Kristy Needham). Little is known about the PAF tactics, techniques and procedures (TTP). I am still waiting for more info (visuals and reviews from other participants) about their art of executing strike missions. One thing known about Filipinos is they strive for perfection to execute precision and synchronicity. The PAF brought four Korean-built FA-50 to the 2024 PITCH BLACK exercise. Can you imagine augmenting their force with a combination of F-15EX (with jammers) and the F-35 (stealth)? They would come up with a TTP that is well coordinated with precision and synchronicity. If you liken choreography with tactical superiority, just look at the UPeepz performance at Body Rock Asia 2023. You will get an idea how the PAF will plan and execute their strike packages with the FA-50 fighters. *Choreography is applicable to the formation of tactics by understanding the hostile forces capabilities (ISR and weapons employment) to find their vulnerabilities and evaluate ones strengths and weaknesses. By doing so, one can "choreograph" the application of one's strengths to exploit the opposition vulnerabilities. And tailor the TTP to minimize exposure of ones weaknesses. The Philippines don't have the same resources of a major power to build a "gorilla package" to strike targets the way the U.S. Air Force can. [See Package Q Strike (Desert Storm) under Comments section]. Big question: How will the allied forces integrate the strengths and tactics of the PAF in combined air forces operations? And how do you prevent "friendly fire" when your allies have no or a different "identification friend or foe?" Something to think about in future combined air exercises.
