Hopefully, you have seen Matt's fundraising effort for Brothers in Arms with his ‘Keep in touch’ old boys' touch rugby team event. All funds raised are going towards our next Blethr updates (currently being worked on) because he sees as we do that the potential for Blethr is just the beginning, we envisage it truly as a means to reduce male suicide, the mission at the very center of Brothers in Arms. "Men's mental health is often misunderstood due to societal norms and expectations." Too often, men feel they must wear a mask of strength and stoicism, suppressing their emotions in order to fit into the societal mould. This can lead to feelings of isolation, anxiety and depression. "Many men feel they can't speak freely about their feelings or struggles." Conversations around mental health are tough for anyone, but for men the challenge is often greater due to societal expectations of masculinity and strength. - "Blethr aims to change this by providing an anonymous, supportive platform where men can express themselves freely without fear of judgment or misunderstanding." WANTED: participants, volunteers & donations for the Hadrian's Wall Challenge, 30 July - 4 August 2024. All funds raised will go directly to 3 wonderful mental health organisations in Oldham, Greater Manchester. Challengers will walk or run 84 miles in 4 days on the beautiful coast-to-coast Hadrian's Wall Path. WHY ARE WE DOING IT? Mental health is crucial to wellbeing...and mental ill health can be hugely debilitating. We all know somebody whose life has been severely impacted by anxiety, depression, suicide, trauma or other mental health challenges. CONNECTION is hugely important to recovery from mental ill health. This Challenge offers the powerful gift of peer support PLUS the healing connection to nature AND the holistic benefits of exercise...all combined with 2000 years of history. In 3 weeks time around 125 people (almost 5% of all entries) will be taking part in the GEAR10K around King's Lynn wearing the Colours of the 8:56 Foundation raising awareness and support for Men's Mental Health and I've managed to somehow complete the application form to be one of them... Now... For those that know me, I think it's pretty obvious to say I'm not the epitome of an athletic specimen, there will be more walking and waddling than running but that's not really the point... So you know where this is heading... I wanted to share the continued brilliant work being done by Time 2 Talk, one of the charities being support by the Charity Event. Time 2 Talk (T2T) was originally developed following the sad passing of a young African-Caribbean man from Derby who had suffered with some mental health difficulties. The initial aim of the group was to support men who historically had low levels of engagement with mental health with the vital support services. The group aims and intends to: 1. Create a safe, supportive, and confidential space for all communities 2. Hold monthly community meetings that provide opportunities to promote community engagement. 3. To organise separate sessions to enable people to talk about there experiences wellness and mental health difficulties. With the funds generated as part of the event, the aim is to create a wider reach and the ability to create pod casts to share experience and stories to wider communities. Sometimes hearing the experience from others can be enough for someone to seek help. Please show you support; even small amounts can make a massive difference.

I know it's not strictly LinkedIn-appropriate, but thought I'd throw this out there to my network anyway as the cause is such an important one... My surf club (Palm Beach NSW) is taking part in the Gotcha for Life 24 Hour Row again this year raising funds and awareness for mental fitness. This will be my second year of particiating, after an amazingly successful first year from our Club raising around $10k. We set up 6 rowing machines, with 3 of them going constantly for 24 hours in one hour shifts rowed by our Palmy team. I’ve committed to 2 slots (including one at 11pm), so will be rowing for a portion of the 24 hours, alongside around 70 of my other clubmates. If you’ve ever sat on an rowing machine, you’ll know that an hour is no joke - a real mental game to power through. Appropriate then, that the cause is building mental fitness and improving mental health. Gotcha4Life was established as a not-for-profit foundation by media personality Gus Worland in 2017.

Hi everyone! I don't often post on LinkedIn (or any social media for that matter!) so when I do, it's usually for something I think is really important. Some may know that I started a journey back in January of this year - a journey to improve my physical health, fitness & mental health. So, I joined the Merthyr Man v Fat Football club, with the aim of shedding a few pounds and getting a bit more exercise (anything was more than I was doing then!) What has blown me away, is how much more the club is than just weight loss and football - it's a group of 100+ (and growing) men who have fully embraced the idea of community, friendship and support - nothing like anything I've ever experienced before. I could wax lyrical about how special this group is all day, but what I'm leading to is what has become a real cornerstone of this group. Back in November, the group sadly lost a member, Alex Meek. Although I never got to meet Alex, from hearing stories of him around the club, it is clear how highly he was thought of and how his passing sent shockwaves throughout the whole community. Sometimes it takes a tragedy like this to open our eyes and break down the stigma that still exists for men to talk about their feelings and worries. And that is why charity organisations such as Signposted Cymru are so important. Signposted Cymru is an initial and immediate intervention with early prevention for individuals struggling and needing support with mental health and well-being issues. This August I'm joining in with a challenge to do 150km in 30 days. My £30 donation/registration will provide 1 counselling session to an individual who is in desperate need of help.
