Hidden Urban Gems # 1: Back Lanes Have you ever come across an urban space while walking or rolling around and imagined it as a vibrant, interactive place where people could socialize? Like many others and me, I bet you have! There are so many urban spaces throughout Metro Vancouver that have the potential to contribute to the sociability, use, activeness, comfort, imageability, accessibility, and connectivity of the city. These quiet, inactive, yet valuable and promising hidden urban gems can create a vibrant network that positively influences surrounding neighborhoods, leading to complete, connected neighborhoods in the future. In the upcoming series on Hidden Urban Gems, I will share my personal perception of latent urban spaces that can be developed into emerging treasures with the prospect of vibrating the entire city when working together as a network. Back lanes are the first one in the series. They are linear spaces with the capacity to embed several active points within them. I can imagine the following activities to make back lanes vivid, dynamic urban places. What would you add to the list? • Small local markets for farmers, artists, and neighborhood residents • Games including board games, card games, and some party games that suit the neighborhood’s environment and culture • A portable café to serve ready-to-go coffee, tea, and treats, which can be provided by local businesses or by interested neighbors • Little Free libraries • Gatherings • Educational classes and workshops (art, basic computer for seniors, math for youth, cooking, etc.) can be offered by interested neighbors • Fundraising events • Local art exhibitions for art students and amateur artists • Neighbors’ meeting to discuss challenges and find appropriate solutions, propose new activities, and issue permits for special events • Group exercises • Dancing • Musical events for special days that can be performed by interested neighbors and youth #Urbandesign #UrbanGems #Placemaking #UrbanSketching #Planning #PublicRealm #PublicSpaces #UrbanSociability #MetroVancouver #BackLanes #CommunityVibes #CityLife #UrbanRevitalization #CommunityActivities #LocalMarkets #VibrantCities #UrbanConnectivity

July is NRPA’s Park and Recreation Month, and there's no better time to recognize the essential role parks play in our communities, especially for marginalized groups. Parks are more than just green spaces; they are places of inclusion, healing, and community building. Promoting Physical and Mental Health: For many marginalized communities, access to healthcare can be limited. Parks provide free, accessible spaces for physical activity, which is crucial for maintaining health. They also offer a serene environment for mental relaxation, which is vital in reducing stress and anxiety, especially for those facing systemic challenges. Fostering Social Connections: Parks serve as gathering spots where people can meet and interact, breaking down social barriers. Community events and programs hosted in parks create opportunities for marginalized groups to connect, share experiences, and build supportive networks. Encouraging Youth Engagement: For young people in underserved communities, parks are safe spaces where they can engage in positive activities, learn new skills, and stay away from harmful environments. Access to recreational programs and sports can be life-changing, offering pathways to personal growth and future opportunities. Cultural Expression and Identity: Parks often host cultural events and festivals that celebrate diverse heritages and traditions. These events provide marginalized communities with a platform to express their cultural identities, fostering a sense of pride and belonging. As we celebrate Park and Recreation Month, let's acknowledge the significant impact parks have on enhancing the quality of life for all, especially those who need it most. Together, let's continue to support and advocate for inclusive, accessible, and vibrant parks in every community. #mmcité #mmcitéstreetfurniture #mmcitédesign #streetfurniture #streetscape #outdoorfurniture #design #publicspace #publicrealm #landscapedesign #landscapearchitecture #landarch #outdoordesign #urbandesign #urbanfurniture #urbanelements #urbanism #urbanisme #urbanist #urbanplanning #urbanlife #architectural #architecture #citylife #city #park #urban #whereyoubelong
