The future talent for developing exciting innovation is truly bright as showcased at this year's Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). Over $9 million was awarded to brilliant young minds at Regeneron ISEF 2024, the world's largest pre-college STEM competition. 🏅✨ Top Honors included: 🏆 Grace Sun from Lexington, KY, won the $75,000 George D. Yancopoulos Innovator Award for developing a groundbreaking organic electrochemical transistor, potentially revolutionizing electronic medical devices. 🔬 Krish Pai from Del Mar, CA, also received $50,000 for his machine-learning software, Microby, which identifies genetically modifiable microorganisms to biodegrade plastics, offering a cost-effective recycling alternative. 🌊 Justin Huang and Victoria Ou developed an ultrasonic filtration system to remove microplastics from water, earning the Gordon E. Moore Award for Positive Outcomes for Future Generations. 🧠 Ingrid Wai Hin Chan's multi-sensory therapy app for dementia patients garnered the Craig R. Barrett Award for Innovation. Developing these types of innovation is essential if we are to tackle the signifcant health and waste system challenges we see across the world. As George D. We're strong believers in praxis, the process of applying theory, lessons or skills in an enacted, embodied, relational context. We see this space as a 'Living Laboratory' exploring curiosity and challenge-led educational approaches at the intersection of biology, design, and technology. We'll be co-creating workshops that are intended to provide hands-on learning experiences in Synthetic Biology, Biomaterials, Cell Culturing and Biomanufacturing. We are also exploring the co-creation of a biodesign studio where people can collaborate with living systems on projects that embody the principles of biological and ecological design. Thanks to everyone who has supported us through the revival process! Biotechnology students at Maynooth University where happy to use the NC-202 automated cell counter in their practicals. It's fantastic to see graduates get hands-on experience in cell culture for bioprocessing and cleanrooms. Here is some of their feedback: 🙂 It really speeds up the workflow, very easy to use, not that large, removes human error. 🙂 Efficient and significantly reduces the time it takes to perform a cell count. 🌟🎓 BSc Thesis Poster Presentation I recently presented my BSc thesis poster on "The Role of 3D Bioprinters in Drug Discovery”. This topic isn't just cutting-edge; it's revolutionary. From transforming drug discovery processes to potentially reshaping our daily laboratory routines, the impact of 3D bioprinting is undeniable. Choosing this topic was a personal passion, aligning perfectly with my love for biotechnology and the exciting advancements we're witnessing in this field. Despite the challenges, the journey has been incredibly rewarding and educational. I'm immensely proud of the work I've put forward. This is just the beginning.
