It’s been a while since I started my role as a researcher at The Global Accountability Network, but I wanted to share this update with everyone -- you can find the link to my recent publication below! My paper with David Crane, the Founding Chief Prosecutor of the UN Special Court for Sierra Leone, discusses the key distinctions between the crimes of forced marriage and sexual slavery in international law. By focusing on the gendered dimensions of forced marriage, our paper contextualizes forced marriage as a distinct gender-based crime, arguing for the prosecution of forced marriage as an inhumane act as a crime against humanity. https://lnkd.in/gjFvb3_T

Debito Arudou: It has been one of Japan’s worst-kept secrets. It has shattered lives and caused enormous international embarrassment to Japan’s reputation as a nation of laws. It has caused untold misery to countless children and families worldwide. And among all the G7 “developed” nations, it only happens like this in Japan. I’m talking about Japan’s issues with child custody and access after divorce.

The ANC wants to lock the proposed GNU into a 5 year commitment. The Party reckons it is in South Africa’s best interest. Experience tells us that the ANC seldom puts country first but has demonstrated that putting Party first is the order of the day. Think of the order to not vote with your conscience in 2018. “You can’t be a party member and you vote with your conscience. That can’t happen”. - Ace Magashule. He was the Secretary General of the ANC at that time. With that in mind can we believe the ANC’s intentions and more so its integrity when considering a 5 year lock. A marriage founded on mistrust will never last. But does it even matter. The results of voter share since 1994 reflect a decline in confidence. At the current rate the Party might find itself floundering around 25% and by the next term even go the way of Cope. There is a saying, “opposites attract”. That might work in a marriage but I certainly see a very bumpy road ahead.
