Thank you Chris Eddy and Diane Kalen-Sukra, MA, CMC for this mornings informative advocacy session on how councils can foster local civility.
There were so many great takeaways from this event, including that building community trust and connection should be a top advocacy priority for all councils. It's a way councils can differentiate themselves from higher levels of government, and create a value proposition around connection to everyday local community life.
We learnt that when local governments prioritise compassion, equity, active listening, and cultural safety, they create safer spaces and build stronger connections. We heard that councils should play a larger role in educating our communities and improving political literacy.
Compassion isn't just a nice-to-have in public policy; it’s essential. It can be brought to life through leadership that is fair and empathetic. Addressing systemic inequality is one way to put compassion into action and make sure everyone in the community is treated equitably.
Listening is key. Councils must take the time to understand the needs of their residents before they defend their actions. I liked the quote we learnt today from Mark Twain, "We have two ears and one mouth, and we should use them in that proportion."
We heard that councils must also honestly ask, "Do we truly know our community? Are we thinking at the people level?" Councils are at their best when they are doing good for others. By designing inclusive processes and encouraging collaboration, councils can create a culture of trust and cooperation. This not only benefits the council but also helps to build stronger, more resilient communities.
So many thought bubbles and actionable items. Thank you for providing this valuable workshop.
A seed is planted in Hamburg today. Now we need to grow it to harvest and to make it accessible beyond our privilieged bubbles. But as we know, genius in the idea, impact comes from action. Ajay Banga, President of the World Bank, stated well today by saying „we need to get things done, talking does not help“. Word. That‘s why we at diconium even go one step beyond. By applying and implementing a methodology into organzations which helps to accelerate at scale by the help of software, data, AI and transformational human skills. We simply call this GTD2, Getting Things Done AT SCALE“. We truly believe good is no longer good enough, and getting things done is no longer enough. if you can‘t scale to do more with less, we are to slow. And as you know, we don‘t have time - in economies, society and out environment. Happy to connect in this, since no one can do everything, but anyone can do something 🙏 Big hugs to Tina Heine and Stephan Engel to create the space between to discuss this at Hadley‘s with a wonderful diverse group of people. Again, it‘s not about „an event“. It is all about the moments and soaces in between which creates the magic to turn ideas faster into action.
