I am excited to start a 9 day journey with 30 different changemakers from across the country in a programme named Earth Shastra (https://lnkd.in/gcDmEujA) Organised by Youth Alliance this is the crux of the programme: “As we enter 2024, the world is on an edge. We are experiencing multiple crises converge simultaneously including environmental, social, political, economic and personal. Media is full with news of climate emergency, wildfires, droughts, wars, political oppression, and mental health crisis. While these crises might look separate and distinct on the outside, they share many common roots. How do we respond to such crises? It's clear that just dealing with the symptoms is not enough. The governments and corporations of the world are naively running after technological solutions that will supposedly take us out of the crises without realizing that the challenges run deeper. There is a need of more fundamental questioning and understanding of the systems from where these crises are born. But there are hardly any spaces for youth where such introspection can happen. Earth-Shastra is a 9-day immersive journey in the lap of mountains, that will bring together 30 young changemakers from across India - to do precisely that. To slow down with a community of like-hearted people amidst nature and make sense of the climate emergency and converging crises of our times. Its a leadership experience to orient one’s life path as a response towards greater harmony with oneself, others and nature. The focus is to develop the capacity to understand the big picture and the humility to start with small actions.”

Indian cities are strategically navigating through urban development while facing a challenging climate scenario, escalated by #greenhouse gas (#GHG) emissions, more frequent #climate disasters, and the impact of urban growth. Monitoring #climateactions is therefore necessary for building #resilience and #sustainable cities. In this context, National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) and Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs have created #CSCAF, a self-assessment tool for cities to monitor their climate action. 👇Explore more about CSCAF in our Did You Know Series (#DYKSeries) Follow #DYKSeriesNIUA #NIUAProjectInsights for more updates. A good read. Developing human capacity strengthens resilience at all levels. Greater effort should be directed towards investing more in human capital and its various domains.

In the past month alone, India has witnessed extreme weather events: Mumbai was inundated with rains, causing widespread flooding and infrastructure damage. Himachal Pradesh experienced devastating landslides triggered by intense rainfall. Delhi endured an extended heatwave, with temperatures soaring unusually high, stressing the energy grid and posing health risks. Karnataka, particularly around Bengaluru, continued to grapple with drought conditions impacting water supplies for agriculture and domestic use. Wayanad is currently grappling with the aftermath of catastrophic landslides. Climate change is now, it's here, it's happened. It's multiplying faster than we're able to imagine. For the past six years, at YKA, we've been doing tons of work to achieve two core goals: one, encouraging young people to document their opinions and realities of climate change, and two, working towards making climate change conversations accessible and being a bridge between citizens and stakeholders. I am stoked to share that yesterday, on #InternationalYouthDay, we officially launched the Youth ACT framework, a collaborative initiative between Youth Ki Awaaz and the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) Affairs. I'm very proud of the work we've done on climate action in the past six years, and this framework boldens it. Imagine a city where youth are not just beneficiaries but active architects of their environment. That's the goal. :) At YKA, all our work stems from the belief that each voice can radically redefine our approach to climate resilience. This framework provides the tools for young people not just to participate but lead. Big props to Mohini Singh, Sapni G K, Berjis Driver, Kirrat Sachdeva, Anshul Tewari and the teams at NIUA x YKA for steering this! :') Here's to our public spaces and cities that not only survive but thrive. Here's to building resilient cities of tomorrow today. Oh, you can access the framework here: https://lnkd.in/gaX4aDdx - //Photo repost from Youth Ki Awaaz #YouthKiAwaaz #YouthACT #ClimateAction #InternationalYouthDay #SustainableCities

#TalkingAboutTransitions 📅 Monday, January 29th, 2024 🕔 5 pm IST. #virtualevent The Global Climate Risk Index 2021 ranks India as the seventh most affected country in the world due to climate change and India’s cities are hotspots of climate risks. ‘Resilience’ has emerged as a dominant framework for cities to adapt to the complex impacts of climate change. However, this approach has largely addressed climate challenges through globalised visions of infrastructure development and technological innovation, while de-centring the needs of the most vulnerable communities, especially residents of informal settlements. On Monday, January 29, 2024, we are hosting a dialogue called ‘Power and Politics: Imaginaries of Urban Resilience’ where our panellists Lizzie Yarina(Northeastern University), Ritu Bharadwaj(International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED)) & Amir Bazaz(Indian Institute for Human Settlements) will be speaking on the predominant visions and narratives of resilience in Indian cities. Moderated by TR Research Fellow Prerna Singh, we will be focusing on addressing real trade-offs, where resilience infrastructure has led to displacement and further marginalisation of vulnerable communities, to discuss new forms of engagement that can provide communities and individuals with an opportunity to co-create and shape their futures. Join us as we discover new pathways for more inclusive and equitable planning for climate risks. Register here: https://lnkd.in/gPy6DDCg . . . . .
