We were delighted to see Informed Solutions Group CEO Elizabeth Vega OBE, a member of the The Open University’s Research Strategic Advisory Board, supporting and celebrating the (OU) showcase of its open and collaborative research, and to celebrate the academics, staff, students, and industry collaborators that are driving this ethos. In celebrating a range of awards, the OU highlighted world class, high impact research collaboration through its Open Societal Challenges #OSCChallengeUs! initiative. Launched in 2023, the Open Societal Challenges concept goal is to use world-leading research in working with external partners across the themes of #TacklingInequality, #LivingWell and #Sustainability to tackle some of society's most critical challenges. After receiving over 200 potential challenges from internal academics, the University launched the ‘Challenge Us!’ competition for recent graduates, UK charities and Milton Keynes businesses to find the most exciting research ideas for tackling real-world problems. Professor Kevin Shakesheff, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Research and Innovation argues that “Research is just the first step. It’s all about collaboration and applying what we find to see real benefits unfolding in society”, that is how The Open University is approaching research. Huge congratulations to one of the first winners of The open Societal Challenges ChallengeUs! awards - National Trust, for its "Tools to Realise Socio-Economic Benefits from Floodplains Under Restoration" (TREASURE) project. I'm ecstatic to announce that our African SCENe (Sustainable Community Energy Networks) is one of thirteen UK research projects that will address urgent global energy and climate challenges through the UK Research and Innovation Ayrton Challenge Programme. The funding will enable us to turn schools within informal settlements into #CommunityEnergy hubs fostering sustainable energy practices, enhancing local resilience, and empowering communities to take control of their energy production and consumption. I'm privileged to be leading an incredible team including SmartKlub Ltd, EduCater Global, Strathmore University, Map Kibera, Women in Sustainable Energy and Entrepreneurship Ltd., Skizaa AI, Human Needs Project and KANGEMI RESOURCE CENTRE for the next three years when we will use the £3m Ayrton fund to deliver a 10-school pilot in wonderful #Kenya. African SCENe addresses 13 #SustainableDevelopmentGoals and has the potential to significantly improve lives not only in Kenya but also in many low-income communities across the world. #NewEcoSmart Roundtable in Italy - Empowering Rural Communities Through Green, Digital, and Entrepreneurial Innovation January 29, 2025 Palazzo Gravina, Faculty of Architecture Time: 2:30 PM - 6:00 PM A meeting on January 29 at Palazzo Gravina, hosted by Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II Departments of Architecture and Public Health, will bring together small municipalities from rural areas in Italy, Spain, and Portugal, alongside universities and Cassa Depositi e Prestiti. The event focuses on fostering green, digital, and entrepreneurial skills to support regional development and improve life in rural and complex areas across Europe. Inspired by the EU-funded NewEcoSmart (NES) project, the initiative promotes inclusive innovation for adults 45+, helping them adapt to green and digital transitions or explore new opportunities. It aims to develop entrepreneurial and socially responsible mindsets by using a free Learning Toolki with a MOOC platform, an APP for microlearning, and a repository of educational resources. Mayors from Naples and nearby municipalities have also expressed interest in expanding the initiative, with Cassa Depositi e Prestiti exploring additional formats. This Stakeholders Roundtable seeks to broaden participation, foster collaboration, and highlight how these skills can reduce health inequalities and improve life for older populations in rural areas and urban peripheries. As part of this transformative initiative, PREPARE is dedicated to empowering rural communities through a variety of impactful activities. Key Contributions: 1. Networking and Synergies 🤝 PREPARE will be at the forefront of establishing strong synergies with rural innovator networks, smart villages, organizations, and other EU-funded projects. Our goal is to enhance knowledge exchange and foster collaborations that drive innovation and development in rural areas. 2. Open Call Management 📣 We are responsible for launching and managing an Open Call to attract SMEs and entities interested in developing their own digital Smart Solutions within the five FUTURAL domains. This initiative will enable the replication and scalability of innovations across more rural areas in Europe. 3. Developing Business Models 💼 PREPARE will co-create inclusive and sustainable business models tailored to the specific needs of various rural communities. These models aim to increase the uptake of smart solutions, with a special focus on low-income and marginalized groups. 4. Policy Recommendations and Governance Frameworks 🏛️ We will collaborate on the development of evidence-based policy recommendations and governance frameworks. These will be crucial in supporting the transition to smart rural areas, ensuring that innovations meet the needs of diverse stakeholders, particularly women, youth, and vulnerable groups. 5. Capacity Building and Training 📚 In addition to organizing workshops, PREPARE will lead capacity-building efforts by developing training materials and conducting sessions that equip rural communities with the skills and knowledge needed to leverage new technologies and innovations effectively. Awarding SCHUMACHER SOCIETY Reseach Fellowship Tim Crabtree for his truely explorative work on opening spaces for community economy initiatives in #socialhousing. In this video you can listen to Tim giving a glimps of his findings and the way he went about his reseach as a member of the Research in Action community. Tim’s research explores how, when seeking to enact change, we can become attentive to the weaving together of different “lines of movement”. This confluence includes the language we use, our subjective positions, the material dimension within which we are immersed, and the ethical deliberation necessary as we work with others. If we understand these as ongoing processes then we can bring attention to possibilities, subtle shifts or small becomings which can take us beyond constraints and stasis.Tim Crabtree is Director of Wessex Community Assets, which supports innovation in collaborative housing, community energy and bio-based sustainable materials. He is also a University of Plymouth researcher, exploring with local people, farmers, architects and builders a Community Economies approach that seeks to change the way we construct and retrofit housing. The Research-in-Action Community offers to give you a taste of our ways of working, we invite you to a series of open conversations. Each session provides an entry point into the distinctive inquiry practices at the heart of our approach. Led by current members of our community, these lively, reflexive, and conversational sessions will present the practices that have supported our growth as researcher-practitioners across diverse fields. The Regina Research Alliance is a co-operative venture between the University of Regina and the City of Regina to identify and pursue opportunities that contribute to creating a livable, prosperous, and sustainable city and campus community. These projects have attracted provincial and federal funding, contributed to student training, and led to the creation of a new start-up company Ecoloop Sustainable Technologies Limited. Evidence-based policies and decision-making are key to building a stronger community. Current active collaborations include a range of topics, including energy and sustainability, urban design and healthcare costs, community perceptions and policing, electric vehicle infrastructure, and innovative approaches to water and wastewater treatment.
