Every business is unique, so are the technology challenges! Helping SMBs/SMEs for >30yrs (CTO, CIO, CISO and SDVOSB - MSP/MSSP)
This is important for any move - test it all! And not just for continuity with a cheap tester. "Cable monkeys" (cheap installers) will pull cable past sharp things that cause a single conductor to be grounded. Those runs will pass a simple continuity check with flying colors but will have terrible connection quality with high packet loss. And then there's the guys who have been doing telecom cabling for decades and forget to pair the network runs properly. (Network pinout works for telecom, but not vice-versa.) Again, passes the continuity test but fails in production. With existing wiring in a new space you may have big issues like below, or "odd" things like runs between rooms, (two jacks, neither of which go back to the wiring closet), or splits where a single run feeds two jacks, (a trick that was useful 20yrs ago, but not nowadays). Not to mention wrong spec cabling (e.g. old Cat3 or worse) or "refreshes" that are done wrong, such as nice new Cat6 pulls that are terminated in existing (old style) RJ45 hardware to save a few bucks. Or folks that did it themselves and didn't know the difference between solid core and stranded. Long story short, there's a 𝙡𝙤𝙩 of ways to screw up cabling in ways that will make your network perform terribly, or not at all. Always have it verified, or if you have IT staff, buy them a Fluke Corporation tester. You can get one that will at least do line-speed verification for <$1k nowadays. (And units that will map it all and generate pretty reports and do endpoint detection and POE voltage checks etc for <$5k.) They'll appreciate having a decent tester when they run into a wonky patch cable or that VoIP phone in the warehouse keeps glitching even though the keyset's been replaced three times. 😏 #network #SMB #VoIP #office
Who cut these damn cables? A business thought they were ready to relocate to a new office, but we checked onsite to verify. If you make assumptions and think things will go well - they often do not. I’ve worked in telecommunications over the last 18 years and visited 2000+ business. But one thing that I continually see time after time… ↳ Making assumptions, especially with technology networks, is not smart. Verizon Fios Circuit, important ethernet cables, alarm lines… all cut by an angry tenant who was forced to leave. (And who evens knows why?!) It’s one of the many reasons why it’s so important to hire professionals who have the right experience and industry knowledge. When you hire someone unproven, really inexpensive or that lacks attention to detail. ↳ You risk dealing with delays & aggravation that could be avoided. So when you’re hiring someone, make sure they have the right skills and reputation. It will save you more than just time, money and headaches in the long run.

🏆IT’S OFFICIAL! I’m in my dream role🏆 What is that role, you ask? Being the personality hire. I worked as a network engineer for over 3 years, my main focus being hands-on work that doesn’t involve a lot of face-to-face with customers. 90% of my time was spent cooped up in a comm room talking to Cisco switches (by talking I mean cursing at them). Now that I was moved into our Plans & Programs office, I joked with my colleagues that I’m a bit out of my depth and will just take on the role of being a “personality hire”. I’ve found that I LOVE talking to people, listening to their concerns, helping them understand our processes and coming to a compromise. I adore seeing a process come out successful, being able to tell a team that I can help them, being the name they ask for when they need something done. You see it a lot on social media that a job in tech requires just as much soft skill work as technical and I couldn’t agree more. Until our world is taken over by robots, the work is centered on the people-oriented outcomes. Bringing your personality, your kindness, your patience, and your authentic self into a workplace will take you so much higher in your professional career than you think.

Senior Network Development Engineer @ Amazon Web Services (AWS) | Network Engineering | Technical Instructor
Ever thought a night out could mirror the work of a network engineer? Surprising, yet true. 😂 Imagine this. You step into a bustling nightclub. The atmosphere is electrifying, people are mingling, music is playing. It's a complex environment with myriad interactions. Much like a network engineer navigating the intricate web of servers, routers, and switches. They ensure smooth communication, just like the DJ keeps the rhythm flowing. The bouncer at the door? They're akin to the firewall. Ensuring only the right people get in, keeping unwanted guests out. The mixologist behind the bar, creating unique experiences for each customer, is much like the engineer customizing network solutions for every unique challenge. Just as the club manager oversees operations, ensuring every part is working in harmony, the network engineer maintains the balance between security, functionality, and efficiency in the digital world. In both worlds, vigilance, quick adaptation, and problem-solving are key. It's about creating an environment where everyone and everything works together seamlessly. The next time you're out, take a moment to appreciate the parallels. And if you're a network engineer, remember, you're not just maintaining networks, you're the DJ, the bouncer, the mixologist, and the manager of the digital realm! Engage below if you've observed any such unique parallels in your line of work. Let's appreciate the beauty of unexpected connections together! #networkengineering #networkengineer #computernetworks

Today, I had the chance to interview a candidate for an exciting role working with Cisco carrier-class devices. This job requires a detail-oriented professional—someone who can manage traffic from customers spanning the entire US, from East to West Coast and Hawaii without error. As I reviewed the resume, it was impressive on the surface: OSPF, BGP, IS-IS, Cisco Nexus hardware, Cisco ASR hardware, Cisco IOS, Cisco IOS XR, Cisco NX-OS—all the right technical skills. But then, I saw it... Typos in critical terms like "multicast" and "MAC address," and inconsistent capitalization when mentioning Juniper NetScreen. It made me think: How can I recommend someone for such a crucial role if they miss important details in their own resume? Attention to detail is more than a technical skill—it's a mindset. #Leadership #Hiring #Cisco #Networking #AttentionToDetail #TechCareers #PrecisionMatters

Data Science & Programming | HAM | Spirituality & Metaphysics Enthusiast | Cannabis Connoisseur | Project Management
HAM | Technician License | Squelch, Net Operations, and RACES | Squelch, Tones and Signaling The squelch function is to mute the receiver audio when a signal is not present, preventing constant static noise in the absence of active communication. Repeater systems, positioned at high vantage points, are exposed to numerous signals. To manage this, they frequently use squelch signaling settings to help keep stray signals from being retransmitted with different types of tones sent, such as CTCSS or DCS. The Continuous Tone-Coded Squelch System (CTCSS) is a subaudible tone transmitted along with normal voice audio to open the squelch of a receiver, acting as a 'key' for accessing repeater services. This system ensures that a repeater only relays signals embedded with the correct subaudible tone. Digital Coded Squelch (DCS) functions similarly but utilizes digital codes rather than tones, and is often preferred in densely populated areas. If you're unable to connect to a repeater despite receiving its output, potential reasons include: -Incorrect transceiver frequency offset. -Necessity for a specific CTCSS tone in your transmission. -Requirement for a specific DCS tone in your transmission. Correcting the above issues is essential for successful repeater access. Additionally, accessing certain features might require unique codes, such as the "color code" in Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) systems, which needs to align with the repeater's settings. Joining a digital talk group involves programming your device with the relevant group ID or code. Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency (DTMF) tones, another form of signaling, are used for controlling repeaters or devices. Linked repeater networks amplify signals across multiple repeaters, enabling wide-area communication. An example is the PAPA network in California, facilitating extensive communication along the coast. #hamradio #ham #amateurradio #womenintech #JoinMyJourney
