The same is true of all professional associations for the same reasons. Politics comes in many shades, but they shouldn’t be engaged in politics. My favorite is the medical associations saying that their gender positions are fact-based, acknowledging there is no factual basis, but sniffing that they’ll get right on that research! Members of any of these associations can join political groups that match their opinions, but nobody cares much what those groups say. But if they co-opt a group with a sterling reputation, that message becomes magnified, as the reputation transmutates the opinion into perceived fact by the public. The problem that these associations forget is that these are one-offs, and once you sell your soul, you cannot buy it back. Just look at the fall-off in membership in the ABA and the AMA, which have become irrelevant in the national debates involving law and medicine.
