As Greater Seattle Partners launches our second annual SelectUSA Spin-off this week in King County, WA Pierce County, and Snohomish County, WA it’s good see companies attracted to the region from last year’s SelectUSA Spin-off like CHARGEPOLY grow in the region. As an Economic Developer, concrete outcomes growing jobs and investment is the target. Economic opportunity is the foundation for making life better for all in a region. Last week Chargepoly CEO Laurent GUYON and Chris Kang Perkins Coie LLP joined the global conversation with an EV company from #Taiwan visiting the #Seattle region. It’s excellent to see a recently-landed company like Chargepoly “pay it forward” by sharing insights with others in industry as GSP seeks to further cultivate the ecosystem through attraction. Launching a new phase of the Urban Vision Lutsk project with ORG, Permanent Modernity, and urban reform💚 After completing a comprehensive urban study of Lutsk, we are moving forward to develop a visionary strategy for the city's ecosystem. Together with partners, we started surveying city stakeholders with Solv.world to assess Lutsk's resources and identify its needs.   The first respondents included:  🔸 entrepreneurs,  🔸 politicians,  🔸 artists,  🔸 volunteers. Interviewing will continue for two months, followed by workshops and presentations to involve as many residents as possible in shaping Lutsk's future vision. This is all made to develop robust programs for the sustainable growth of Lutsk and Volyn region. There are efforts underway to "link Ecosystem Knowledge Hubs/Centers" who have IP that are east of Colorado more closely with the Colorado Community = "Opportunity". Not to mention, Marc Patterson at Endeavor Colorado. 2. The CU Boulder Innovation & Entrepreneurship Initiative is building funnel and pipeline = "Opportunity" by a) expanding the High School New Venture Challenge with a "eye" to state wide deployment, and b) incubating an adjacent NVC program = more on that from Stan Hickory when he is ready. 3. Should we prioritize people, or tech innovation in our large-scale development projects? The strategy's slowly shifting to people. And that’s exactly how California Forever CEO Jan Sramek wins over skeptics like Kara Swisher and Scott Galloway. Not bad. “There’s a lot of baggage that tech has created in building new cities that, unfortunately, we are at the receiving end of”, explains Sramek. So smart cities and tech libertarian network states aren't the focus here. Quite the contrary. He calls the project (in this context) “really, really boring.” The focus: ∙ More housing ∙ Walkable cities ∙ Affordable by design* ∙ Improving the country for residents *(housing prices to start at $400k) I recently covered California Forever, dubbing it a future ‘Tech Utopia’ given its massive Silicon Valley backing. In one sense California Forever seems like science fiction. In another, with the rising numbers of the uber-wealthy, it seems very real and possible. If you were to design it, what would it look like? How would you minimize the effect on those already in Solano County? Better yet, how would you improve living conditions and overall society for those current residents and those nearby? How would you emphasize long and short term social goals? How would you plan for them? How would you design it to account for changes in society a century out that we can’t expect today? One gets the sense that many of these things aren’t on the table for those planning CF. They seem to want to plan it for their own convenience and will discard it like a toy they’ve outgrown once they are done. In any case, lots to ponder in the thought of designing your own real life city.
