🎤 HAPPY PROFESSIONAL SPEAKERS DAY! 🎤 It was over 20 years ago I walked away from Corporate Australia to pursue a dream and speak on stages. Once I got over the conditioning of what other people thought ie 'who does she think she is' and gave myself permission that it was OK to be in the spotlight and that I did, in fact, have value to give ... the next non-negotiable was to provide that value as well as inspiration to my audiences - predominantly to audiences responsible for bringing in sales revenue ....and even more around embracing uncertainty, resilience and resourcefulness by weaving insights with personal stories ...and I found my happy place! Speaking as a profession has taken me around the world - from the UK to Uluru, from Paris to Portugal, Canada to Chicago, New Delhi, New Zealand and New York City, Bangkok to Brisbane, Melbourne to Minneapolis, and here in Colorado. I have met amazing friends and colleagues across the globe - event organizers, agents, speakers, trainers, men and women and we all have one thing in common - to shift the way our audiences think and feel. 🎤 TRIVIA 1 - My first PAID speaking engagement was to a room filled with 100's of leaders from Sensis (think Yellow Pages!) It was from a cold call, to a guy who betted on me (Hi Cam Rojo 😊 ) 🎤 TRIVIA 2 - I was so excited I made the rookie speaker's mistake - no footage! Instead this early pic brings back those enthusiastic memories of choosing the path less taken! 🎤 TRIVIA 3 - March 14 (also known as "pi" day π (i.e., 3.14) has been chosen to celebrate this worldwide day for professional speakers, as the word "pi" also ties into the motto of Cavett Robert (Founder of the National Speakers Association): "Don't worry about how we divide up the pie. There is enough for everybody. Let's just make a bigger pie!" A motto for life! My suggestion to you is if speaking is something you want to do, then make the move - give yourself permission and do it! "Are we ready to move?" This was my opening question as I took the stage as an emcee last week. Addressing a room full of conference attendees at 9am isn't easy, especially if you are not sure whether they have had their morning coffees! But when the audience is receptive, it's pure magic. And this audience really was! The organisers for this internal company conference absolutely nailed their comms - a crucial skill for #eventprofs ! From the initial brief through to delivery and the emcee script, it was clear they understood the culture and needs of the company and designed the event around their audience. The whole event spoke to a consistent message and the audience needs, wants and desires. It is a joy to emcee such events. The audience were completely bought in - and the question "Are you ready to move" prompted an energy and response I wasn't expecting. This response was a privilege for me as an emcee and is partly why I do what I do! After three times of scheduling conflicts that prevented me from giving a TEDX talk in Germany the last years, I'm thrilled to announce that I will finally be delivering my first TEDx speech in Romania, at TEDxAristide Demetriade. In preparing for this event, I realized just how intertwined my life is with Romania. My new employee is from Romania, my mentor Astrid Maier is Romanian, and as a child, my family had Romanian neighbors for two years. My dear friend Nicoleta Danu, and the wife of one of my team members, are also Romanians. It feels like destiny has been nudging me towards this beautiful country, and it’s about time I visited. For months, I've been wonderfully supported by the team led by Dragos Argint and especially my coach Andreea Grecu - many thanks! 😍 Here's a peek into my meticulously structured preparation plan: ▶️May 10: First Draft of the Speech ▶️June 10: Final Draft of the Speech ▶️June 15: First Internal Rehearsal Online ▶️July 13: 2nd Online Rehearsal ▶️September 7: 3rd Online Rehearsal ▶️ September 20: Rehearsal at the Event Location ▶️ September 21: Ta-daaa – The Event! Even though I’ve been on stage many times before, as the day approaches, my excitement—and nerves—are growing. From flights and hotel bookings to meals, gym schedules, trains, outfits, and speaker notes—they handle everything behind the scenes so I can focus on delivering my best on stage. Here’s a real-life example: Last Saturday, after hosting a 12-hour event, I finally sat down for dinner when I got hit with the news—my 6am flight the next morning was cancelled 😳. The problem? I had to be in Germany from Hungary the next day for another event. Cue the panic... but not for long. Thanks to my amazing team, who stepped up under pressure, we found a solution. They rerouted, rescheduled, and ensured everything went smoothly so I could make it to the next event on time. This journey isn’t just about me—it’s about the power of a strong team.
