Today, I was surprised. I was updating the flyer I made exactly a year ago and realized... my graphic design skills got a lot better! For those who don't know, graphic design has been my "side #passion ." From my childhood, I liked painting but always wanted to try graphic design for fun. So, once I became a college student, I used to sneak into the community college's computer lab to play with Adobe #Illustrator (along with other apps), not knowing how it worked. From there, I pretty much self-taught. I taught myself digital art by watching online tutorials. Even after I graduated and landed a job that was remotely different from graphic design, I kept designing because I liked it - flyers, posters, logos, booklets, etc. However, I always felt that my design looked nowhere near professional (that's why I almost never charged my "clients") I kept practicing and took on any opportunities where I could design (don't worry, I didn't slack off from my full-time job). And here, I see some #progress. A #key #takeaway I wanted to share here is... if you have "side passions" like me, make sure to practice (and record it) and #celebrate a progress! It is so rewarding to feel that you are developing skills, and it is reflected on things that you produce. I'm excited to continue designing! How I got my first contract as a graphic designer. We were to receive a graphic design tutor in our ministry for a skill empowerment program in few days. Seeing it was a field I was very passionate for, I became so geeked. It was was a great opportunity that will help me: -Sharpen my design skills -Broaden my knowledge -Improve my creativity -Solidify my expertise So i joyfully reached out to the coordinator to share some of my design projects I've worked on. To my suprise, my visuals turned out to be more professional than the awaiting tutor. Immediately, the tables turned. The coordinator said to me, you'll be the one to teach everyone graphic design. How come you didn't share this to me earlier, he said. Down the line, -I replaced the design tutor -I became the instructor -I got the contract Trained more than 15 folks directly on graphic design for about a month +. Never underestimate yourself. If you’re just starting your journey in the world of graphic design, here are some tips and insights that I hope will inspire and guide you as you grow in this exciting field. 1. Embrace the Learning Curve Graphic design is an ever-evolving field. New tools, trends, and technologies emerge constantly. When I first started, I was overwhelmed by the sheer amount of things I needed to learn—be it software like Adobe Creative Suite or understanding design principles. However, the key to thriving is to remain curious and open to continuous learning. Whether it’s mastering a new tool or understanding a new design trend, never stop learning. Online tutorials, design courses, and experimentation are your best friends in this process. 2. Build a Strong Foundation Before diving into complex designs, it's essential to master the basics: typography, color theory, layout, and composition. These principles are the backbone of all great design work. During my early years, I realized that even the most creative designs lose impact without a solid foundation. Take time to study the fundamentals—they will make you a more versatile and skilled designer. 3. Seek Inspiration, but Develop Your Own Style It’s easy to get inspired by design trends on social media platforms like Behance, Dribbble, and Pinterest. While it’s important to observe what others are doing, don’t fall into the trap of mimicking trends without adding your own twist. Your unique style is what will set you apart in the industry. Experiment with different aesthetics until you find what feels natural to you. As you work on more projects, your signature style will naturally develop and evolve. A year and some change into my product design career, I have finally come to terms with something: while you don't necessarily need a graphic design background, having some foundation can be incredibly valuable. Coming from a non-graphic design background myself, I initially found comfort in the idea that it wasn't essential for product design. However, recently diving into poster design with Photoshop has changed my perspective. ❓ Why Learn Graphic Design Fundamentals? I highly recommend that junior product designers, like myself, learn at least the basics of graphic design. It's not just about improving visual design or strengthening your grasp of visual communication (I'm convinced these are numbers 2 & 3 of the top 3 reasons to learn graphic design). The truth is, learning graphic design is simply fun. I can't tell you how delightful it has been for me these past few days learning to mix and mashup little elements to create one big masterpiece! 😁 The thrill of executing a creative vision you have is second to none! Hi everyone, I'm Akshaya, and I’m excited to share my journey into the world of graphic design. After completing my post-graduation, I found myself at a crossroads, unsure of my next move. That’s when a good friend of mine, a talented graphic designer with a deep knowledge of digital marketing, became my mentor. I asked her to teach me graphic design, and she eagerly agreed! We started with digital marketing, but after a brief pause due to personal reasons, we pivoted to something even more creative – poster designing. Let me be honest – it wasn’t easy at first. As a beginner, I made plenty of mistakes: incorrect spacing, poor color choices, wrong font selections – you name it. But I didn’t let those mistakes stop me. My friend challenged me to recreate posters, and I embraced every error as a learning opportunity. Over time, I became more confident and started noticing improvements. I’d scroll through Instagram or browse Google, looking for new designs to recreate, pushing myself to learn something new with each attempt. The turning point? One day, I sent a recreated poster to my friend, and she responded with, “Wow!” That simple word was the validation I needed. From that moment on, I knew I had made real progress. Today, I can proudly say that I’ve created business posters, brochures, social media posts, PDFs, and more. While I’m still honing my font selection skills, I’ve become much better at spacing, color coordination, and overall design. The biggest lesson I’ve learned? Trust yourself. The journey may be tough, and people might doubt your choices, but if you follow the path that brings you joy and satisfaction, you’re on the right track. I’m a happy poster designer now, and I’m excited to dive into the next chapter – brand design. Can I do it?
