BloombergNEF's inaugural long duration energy storage cost survey was highlighted in a recent Utility Dive article, and the survey found compressed air to be a cheaper option than lithium-ion batteries for 8-plus hour storage durations. #renewables are the #fastest growing segment of #energy generation. But we need to #store the #energy to be used when #wind and #solar are not available. There are some #simple, #natural and #effective ways to do that #without #lithium. #thermalbatteries. E.g. 1) Sand battery - Uses #renewable energy to #heat #sand to 600 DegC, later #releasing the #heat (400 DegC) for #domestic heating. Polar Night Energy Oy have a prototype using 100 tonnes of low-grade sand in #finland, and are planning a new battery 10 x the size. 2) Heat bricks - each #brick weighs 500 kg. Rondo Energy have developed this #thermal brick to #store #heat at up to 1500 DegC that means it is #highly #suitable for #industrial processes to replace #coal. 3) Crushed #rock - building waste and quarry spoil can be used to make a #rock #battery. Brenmiller Energy ($BNRG) already has units in place providing #energy to #hospitals for example. 4) Molten #salts - #solar #heliostats #reflect the suns energy to a central receiving tower #heating molten salts to 560 DegC in a large tank. The molten salt can store the equivalent of 17 hours of energy. Cerro Dominador in #chile have one of the world's largest heliostat power stations that can #perate 24 hrs a day. I hold no brief for FirstEnergy but I agree that it's way past time for PJM, ISO-NE, NYISO and MISO to acknowledge that capacity markets do not and can not elicit meaningful amounts of new capacity. The entire structure is meaningless: it's based on the principle that a KW is a KW and should be priced on an anodyne basis no matter what the generation technology, the time needed for development, prevailing state and federal policies and, most importantly, that generation plants need to be financed over a period of at least 10-12 years while the market provide for 3 years at most. #electricutilities #renewableenergy #energymarkets
