Last week, JAMA published a study highlighting the mountain of evidence about leveraging health spaces for nonpartisan civic engagement — with findings showing that healthcare-based voter access reaches exactly those voters who otherwise would not have the opportunity to cast their ballot. This study focuses on Vot-ER's impact, but Vot-ER is one of many organizations recognizing this connection. AltaMed Health Services has a longstanding track record of driving higher voter turnout in their Southern California communities, with impressive studies of their 2018 impact. Nonprofit VOTE and National Voter Registration Day have long recognized the power of these integrated voter engagement opportunities. Vot-ER along with our partners at the Civic Health Alliance and Healthy Democracy Healthy People and our many Civic Health Partners support hundreds of organizations and tens of thousands of health professionals all across the US. As we get closer to #CivicHealthMonth, we encourage health organizations to build their voter engagement plan for the year at one of our Roadmapping sessions: https://lnkd.in/eMpGrWpn And check out the JAMA article too! https://lnkd.in/es-MtYkj

As we near the end of #VoterRegistrationMonth, it is a reminder that your vote matters. At Healthy Communities Foundation, we understand the deep connection between civic engagement and the overall wellbeing of a community. Decisions that impact institutions we interact with every day—such as schools, health centers, and public parks—or how funding is allocated for public health programs and affordable housing are shaped by elected officials at all levels of power. By engaging in the democratic process, we can shape the future of our neighborhoods, ensure they receive the resources they need to thrive and improve the wellbeing of our communities in the process. Happy National Public Health Week! Monday's theme of civic engagement emphasizes taking action to identify and address issues that impact our community's health. Civic engagement encompasses a range of activities, including voting, ensuring neighborhood safety, connecting with community members, seeking input, and more. To become more civically engaged, consider the following: Vote: It's a powerful way to support and advocate for your community. Voting reflects your values and priorities. Did you know that voter turnout in Cerro Gordo County was 75.24% in the 2020 general election, but only 54.59% in 2022? Learn about policies, campaigns, and volunteer opportunities: Understanding these aspects can help you understand their impact on your community. Seek input from others: Listening to the community is crucial for public health professionals. Data may show one thing, but hearing directly from the community can reveal different needs and priorities. Happy #NPHW to all!
