Two years ago, I was working the day chaos unfolded—Cst. Hong was shot in Peel, and the violence rippled through Halton and Hamilton. In just a few hours, three lives were lost, and five police agencies were pulled into a multi-jurisdictional manhunt to prevent further harm. The coordinated response was extraordinary. I witnessed the urgency and precision as dispatchers worked closely with officers, sharing critical information as it was obtained.  It was a powerful reminder of how essential seamless communication is in those moments—lives depend on it. Interoperability often focuses on radio systems and field communication—but what about communication between 9-1-1 centres? If one centre's heartbeat can’t seamlessly connect with another, how can they stay in sync and ensure everyone is on the same page? True interoperability needs to go beyond the field, allowing dispatchers to collaborate in real-time to make faster, life-saving decisions. Like many in 9-1-1, I thought we had to wait for proper NG9-1-1 infrastructure, with solutions implemented further down the road. It wasn’t until I joined RapidSOS that I realized tools exist today to address this interoperability challenge. It’s this call, and many others, that fuels my passion for interoperability because when it comes to preserving life, there's no question—every second counts. In October 2023, we started our Dare to Share series, which includes conferences, seminars, roundtables and joint patrols to support our businesses in tackling business crime and anti-social behaviour. Since its inception we have looked at the national landscape, what individual businesses are rolling out to protect staff, respond to increasing shoplifting, aggressive begging and drug use as well as holding roundtables with representatives from the Met Police, Lambeth Council and Safer Business Network. Our most recent meeting was featured in The Times by journalist David Woode. Members of the business community highlighted the challenges they are currently facing in relation to crime. Gianluca Rizzo, our Managing Director added "Having a uniformed police presence on the streets responding to and acting on concerns is key for any business community. The problem's we are experiencing cannot be solved by police alone. Years of cuts to public services have resulted in more issues on the street, not just theft and robberies."
