Starting month 2 in my new role as a Strategy Analyst. You might wonder, what's the difference between a Strategy Analyst and a Data Analyst? So far, here are the differences for me: Data Analyst Tasks - Here is this SQL data model, need to publish these updates in DBT & Tableau - We need reporting for team [X], go build Tableau data source & dash - Tableau dash is broken -- can you fix? - Mainly Tableau & Data Source asks Strategy Analyst Tasks - Understanding & partnering with many business stakeholders to understand pain points, processes, and drive results to goals. - We need/want to close more deals this quarter, what are some low-hanging initiatives I can help drive? - How can we build a data reporting package to answer questions X, Y, & Z? - Update existing reports with current quarter/year targets The main difference I have seen is Strategy tasks usually start with a broad question, like "How do we increase revenue?". Whereas in my Data Analyst roles, tasks often come more from the Strategy/Business teams coming to me saying, "Hey, we have this initiative to increase revenue, can you provide a Data Source for us & reporting?". Obviously, this will depend on the company, department, team size, etc. but a pure Data Analyst is usually working on more of the technical aspects (data modeling) while a Strategy Analyst is working more on business operations (implementing data-backed decisions). Both roles are data roles. But the day-to-day work is very different. Which one do you think you prefer? Good points, thanks for sharing Jon. Based on my 2-year experience as a Strategy Analyst in competitive CPGs industry, my humble insights from this side are: 1. Data Analyst + Strategy Analyst is a "1 + 1 > 2" combo for business in an era of exploding data. 2. Being a Strategy Analyst is probably one of the most efficient ways for a person to build a concrete foundation about the industry, business and beyond. 3. A good strategy analyst must be a open-minded self-starter so they could keep track on cutting-edge technologies and constantly bring in growth while managing risks. Advanced technical skillset is a big plus. 4. Strategy Analyst is a data role and beyond: it doesn't require candidates to be as technical as a Data Analyst/Scientist but it probably engage Finance, Sales, Marketing, Supply Chain and more in the march toward an organization's long-term objectives.
