The Aging Revolution: Growing old in America becoming more dignified, but with senior population booming, is nation’s health system prepared? “In his 1975 book, Why Survive: Being Old in America, Butler – who died in 2010 – argued that old age for many people had become “a period of quiet despair. . . and muted rage” and he launched a social movement to mitigate it. Thanks to the advocacy of Butler and others featured in the book, chronic conditions that accompany older age are now far more manageable, allowing individuals to enjoy longer, healthier lives so they can continue their work and professional development, education, leisure, travel and physical activity, while spending quality time with their families and loved ones” Check out the new book, The Aging Revolution: The History of Geriatric Health Care and What Really Matters to Older Adults, written by Michael J. Dowling, Charles Kenney, and Maria Torroella Carney, MD, MACP https://lnkd.in/ghUurdbh

💪🏻🏋🏾 Get Strong Live Long 🏋🏼♀️💪🏻 I always reinforce strength training to patients, especially to those in middle/older patients who often overlook this in their weekly routines. People are often overwhelmed at the thought of this, but it doesn’t need to include lifting heavy weights. Body weight resistance training is a good start and may be adequate for people. A useful resource for those over 60s new gym goers https://lnkd.in/ddN-DHb7 Benefits of strength training I discuss - 💪🏻 Increase muscle mass - especially important due to muscle atrophy with ageing ❤️ Improves cardiovascular health by lowering blood pressure, cholesterol and insulin resistance 🦴 Improves bone density and helps stabilise joints ⚖️ Redcues body fat - burning calories during and after and increasing metabolic rate 🧠 Supports mental wellbeing - it’s been shown to help with depression and anxiety symptoms 🛌 Improves sleep quality #healthybodyhealthymind #strengthtraining #bodyweighttraining #livestrong #livelong #exerciseismedicine #fitnessmotivation #cardiovascularhealth #nhs #generalpractice #weightmanagement #strongbones #healthyhabits #mentalhealthcare
⚠️ How might power training help to prolong independence and promote healthy ageing in older adults? 💪 NEW #Editorial delves into this topic and highlights the need for more research 📄 ➡️ https://bit.ly/3NU0hn8

Quick but Important Notes Re: Maternal and Child Health—Zoom—Biden-Harris Today Today’s Zoom included Drs. Stephen Cha (Dept. Health and Human Services), Dora Hughes (CMS), Jordan Grossman (HRSA), Shalini Wickramatilake (Sr. Advisor Substance Abuse/Mental Health Services), Wanda Barfield (MPH, FAAP, CDC, Society for Women’s Health Research, and Dir. Women’s Health Research), Sarah Boateng (Principal Deputy Asst. Secretary U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services), and Que English (Founder: Not on My Watch, Inc [anti-domestic violence and trafficking) Today’s highlights focused on the following: 1. Focusing on and converting clear message: “mother and child heath care are a right for all, not a privilege” 2. Providing better before and after-care health and support for mothers and babies 3. Focusing on well-being after deliveries 4. Supporting young families 5. Focusing on postpartum mortality rates and prevention 6. Care after leaving hospital 7. Longer periods of care and support after delivery and return home The session resonated with the message: aims targeted across the entirety of the United States.
