As America pauses today to celebrate Juneteenth a day that marks the landing of Federal Troops at Galveston within the great state of Texas to take control and ensure all enslaved people be rightfully freed I would like us to equally remember that we continue to have a great deal of work remaining even 161 years later. There are many efforts and champions of DEI efforts within government, academia, and business and I applaud their work. However, I stand firm in my assertion that as a society we have not achieved the goal of ensuring all enslaved people be rightly freed. These efforts must be continued, they must be discussed, and absolutely actioned. We pushed the disgusting act of human slavery from accepted and open observance to the shadows. Today in our society and globally the human slave trade remains a fully functioning system, with an estimated 46-50 million enslaved people in 2024, often targeting the most vulnerable of DEI populations. Sometimes these activities take place right in front of us with the support of both the witting and unwitting. As a society we must better educate each other on the signs of human trafficking which feeds the slavery process. We must understand when we might interact with events traffickers target for profit. We must be willing to report it when suspected. And we must all continue the assignment that our great leader gave to us 161 years ago to ensure all enslaved people be rightfully freed.

#thinkingoutloud: Nikki Haley is only partially right in her response to the question about the 'what was the main cause of the civil war." The root cause of the civil war was slavery. The impetus of the war began on April 12, 1861, when Confederate troops fired on Fort Sumter in South Carolina's Charleston Harbor, which was the beginning of the Civil War. However, the economics of the system of slavery, the election of Republican President Lincoln in 1860, lack of political control in the south, territorial expansion westward denying entry into the union with slaves, and states rights were issues, too. The southern states wanted to eliminate the federal laws in place to keep slavery. Whereby, the southern states seceded from the union, and that led directly to war. "Presidential hopeful Nikki Haley has been slammed for refusing to say that slavery was the main cause of the Civil War. Haley, the 51-year-old former governor for South Carolina, blundered her way through the question at town hall debate in Berlin, New Hampshire, on Wednesday night. The former UN representative jokingly told the audience member 'well, don't come with an easy question', before claiming that the Civil War was fought for freedom and ideological differences in how governments ought to work. "I think the cause of the Civil War was basically how government was going to run, the freedoms of what people could and couldn't do.' The White House hopeful, currently a distant third place to Donald Trump in the race for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, can then be heard going on a tangent about the limits of government overreach and civil liberties. 'I think it always comes down to the role of government and what the rights of the people are, and I will always stand by the fact that I think government was intended to secure the rights and freedoms of the people. 'It was never meant to be all things to all people. Government doesn't need to tell you how to live your life. 'They don't need to tell you what you can and can't do. They don't need to be a part of your life. They need to make sure that you have freedom. 'We need to have capitalism. We need to have economic freedom. We need to make sure that we do all things so that individuals have the liberties so that they can have freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to do or be anything they want to be without government getting in the way.'

A little political humor for anyone still in the mood.... Tomorrow we celebrate Declaration of Independence 🇺🇲. The founding document of the United States, was approved by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, it announced the separation of 13 North American British colonies from Great Britain. Did you know the consituation was written in 1787, ratified in 1788, and in operation since 1789. The United States Constitution is the world's longest surviving written charter of government. Its first three words; "We the People" affirm that the government of the United States exists to serve its citizens. As a kid I had to memorize the preamble "We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."
