🚁 Advancing Cleaner Aviation with Sustainable Fuels! 🚁 A recent study from the Technische Universität München (TUM) on the Allison 250-C20B turboshaft engine demonstrates the potential of HEFA-SPK (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) to significantly reduce particulate matter (PM) emissions. 🔬✨ By blending HEFA-SPK with conventional Jet A-1, the research shows a clear decrease in particle number and size, with the most substantial impact observed at lower #engine loads. 💨 Using the Catalytic Stripper (°Catalytic Instruments), the study precisely measured non-volatile particulate matter (nvPM), providing a clear picture of HEFA-SPK’s effectiveness in reducing #emissions. 🌍 This work highlights the critical role of sustainable fuels in reducing aviation’s environmental footprint, particularly in tackling ultrafine particles that affect air quality and contribute to climate change. A selection of suitable materials is critical for the safety of any hydrogen application. Most engineers know that hydrogen embrittlement and other hydrogen-specific damaging mechanisms of various metallic materials represent serious threats. Nevertheless, a handful of people have understood the highly complex physics of hydrogen-material interactions to predict and prevent hydrogen embrittlement and other hydrogen damage. Blending hydrogen into existing natural gas pipelines and hydrogen transport is now being actively considered as part of the decarbonization strategy in Europe, Australia, and the United States. The key impediment is the possibility of hydrogen embrittlement and hydrogen-induced cracking of steel pipelines. In 2019, Professor Milos B. Djukic from the University of Belgrade in Serbia published a comprehensive critical review article on “The synergistic action and interplay of hydrogen embrittlement mechanisms in steels and iron: Localized plasticity and decohesion“, which established the unified HELP+HEDE model for the synergistic action of hydrogen embrittlement mechanisms in steel and iron, proposed by the same group of authors in 2015, and now widely accepted. This article reached 400+ citations. It is the most cited article in the Engineering Fracture Mechanics journal published in 2019. The first 100kg vehicle-mounted liquid hydrogen system has been developed in China, according to local reports. H2 View understands that the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) has produced the system and claimed it will mark a “new breakthrough in the country’s transportation sector.” Compared with its predecessor, the new system boasts a 20% increase in effective volume with identical dimensions, whilst reducing costs by more than 30%. With a capacity of up to 100kg of hydrogen, the system will power heavy-duty trucks to achieve a range of over 1,000km. Local reports from the Xinhua News Agency stated the system meets “international standards in terms of system quality, hydrogen storage density and refuelling time.” https://lnkd.in/gnqCNr_E

Our advanced research with MAHLE Jet Ignition®(#MJI) continues with recent work demonstrating our capability to run an engine on 100% ammonia at low engine speed and load with stable combustion using passive MJI. Moreover, a co-fueling approach has also been developed with our active MJI system where hydrogen is injected into the pre-chamber and ammonia is port-fueled into the main chamber. This configuration allows running at lower loads and has achieved 40% net indicated efficiency at 1800 rpm with reduced engine-out NOx. The work is being conducted at the University of Nottingham propulsion test facility and is presented in a new SAE paper. This is a joint paper between the US and UK MAHLE Powertrain groups on the topic of ammonia combustion, an interesting decarbonization topic for large marine applications in particular.

The goal of our organization is to have an unbiased, objective board who have different perspectives and objectives. Jorge Antunes the CEO of #TecnoVeritas, as stressed the following points: a) The main and urgent decarbonization problem is the existing fleet, that will be in operation for the next 10-15 years. b) Ammonia Methanol ans Hydrogen are hardly feasible for existing fleet, c) Reference shipping stakeholders in particular Classification Societies need to hilight the difficulties of using Ammonia as a marine fuel, as it is not available, it is a commodity for many other applications mainly for fertilisers, highly toxic, one of its combustion by-product N2O has a highly damaging potential of the Ozone layer many times the one of CO2, the storage plant is cryogenic, it burns badly, there are no type approved engines running on NH3, d) The production process of NH3 production, even green NH3 is highly energy intensive and inefficient! e) The use of methanol, releases Hydrogen Cyanide (extremely toxic)as a by-product, and low NET Calorific Value "green fuels" have a strong impact on ship design namely on volume and mass capacity of the hulls, f) Need to have trained crews to handle such hazardous "fuels", g) He has put forward the possible use of LOHC to have safely hydrogen on-board. #Ammonia to #decarbonize inland #shipping: Today, Sascha Prehn from the Chair of Piston Machines and Combustion Engines (LKV), Universität Rostock, will present the latest findings from our joint project “Ammonia Ship Engine” at the Sustainable Shipping Conference in Bremen. The research project “Ammonia Ship Engine” is being carried out with our partners from the #CAMPFIRE alliance and focuses on the systematic analysis and experimental testing of a novel ammonia #cracker gas engine system suitable for the operation of an inland waterway vessel. In addition to the development of an ammonia-hydrogen combustion concept, an ammonia cracker for the production of #hydrogen from ammonia for #marine applications is also being developed and verified as part of the project. Based on experimental investigations on a single-cylinder research engine, a suitable process for energy conversion in the propulsion engine is derived and optimized by accompanying simulation. On this basis, a full engine concept is developed which, in conjunction with the developed ammonia cracker, is transferred to a test facility and examined for operation in an inland vessel. In addition to optimizing the system operation and determining the operating limits, a further focus is on the simulation-based optimization of the overall energy system through the thermal coupling of the drive engine and ammonia cracker. On the basis of the process simulation models provided and the experimental data of the individual systems and the overall plant, the proposed new drive concept will be conclusively evaluated in technical and economic terms. The project will create the basis for using "#green" ammonia within climate-neutral shipping.
