Since 2006, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have built The Row into a leader in “quiet luxury.” Its minimalist, timeless designs are attracting a market that value subtlety over logos. For Chanel and L’Oréal, it’s about future-proofing. As traditional Luxury faces slowing growth, investing in emerging brands that speak to younger, discerning consumers ensures future relevance. Is bad (or any) press still good press? I kept wondering whether this would be the case for Witchery's latest collection, Bold Awakening, where a rebrand was introduced on its 54-year history, and an edgier look. However, their longstanding customers did not appreciate this rebrand, which involved shrinking their range of available sizes and scrubbing their social media. I spoke to the very talented Melissa Singer from The Age/ The Sydney Morning Herald about rebranding, its pros and cons, and the varied reactions to the brand's commitment to inclusivity after removing size 20 from their collection, and my thoughts on brands scrubbing their social media. You can read the article here: https://lnkd.in/gQegr8cf I also had a wonderful chat on air with Nic Healey and Richelle Hunt from Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Melbourne about brands carrying a sense of responsibility when designing a fashion collection. Representation in fashion can empower varied (and underrepresented) groups by providing visibility and a platform to showcase cultures, identities, and perspectives. It sends a message of acceptance and recognition to consumers. So yes, fashion brands should take responsibility as they have the power to influence social norms and perceptions through their designs. Responsible design means considering #diversity, #inclusivity, and #representation in their collections, promoting positive social values and inclusiveness. Going back to my original question (whether there's no such thing as bad press), despite the backlash Witchery received for their lack of inclusive sizing, it turns out (for them at least) that any press is good as their GM claims that early sales are up with this relaunch! However, this is certainly not always the case (e.g., Pepsi and Kendall Jenner's ad) and only time will tell whether Witchery's strategy actually worked. Over four days of celebrations to mark its centenary in 2014, Spain’s biggest beauty products company inaugurated a new headquarters in Barcelona attended by the Iberian nation’s then Prince Felipe and threw a splashy party for more than 1,000 people at the world’s largest art nouveau complex. But in a quieter yet more important marker of that milestone, Chief Executive Officer Marc Puig, a member of the founding family’s third generation, took 50 of his top employees that year to Harvard University — his alma mater — to chalk out a growth path for the company in a case study that was co-authored by Krishna Palepu, a distinguished business school professor, and Puig’s then board member Pedro Nueno. Ten years on, the fruits of that blueprint are evident: With such well-known perfume and fashion brands as Rabanne, Jean Paul Gaultier and Carolina Herrera, revenue at Puig — which presents itself as a smaller yet more luxurious version of France’s L’Oreal — has more than doubled and the group is set to go public in the largest European offering of the year.
