I am a freelance journalist with experience reporting complex longform stories on the environment and environmental justice. I am also on the board of directors for the Society of Environmental Journalists.
My latest The Margin on the City of Seattle's impacts on the Skagit River and the Upper Skagit Indian Tribe.
In 2020, National Park Service aquatic ecologist, Ashley “Ash” Rawhouser, conducted an analysis confirming the oral traditions and findings of the Upper Skagit Tribe, concluding no such barriers to anadromous fish migration existed in the Skagit River until SCL dammed the river and dewatered the bypass reach. In his latest piece for The Margin, Rico Moore reports on how contemporary science merges with oral history to debunk widely accepted falsehoods. 🔎 READ THE FULL STORY: “A RIVER OF DECEPTION” 🔍 www.themargin.us ⬅️ The Margin is an independent project at Counterstream Media. This issue is co-published with The Nation. Photos by Chona Kasinger. #IndependentJournalism #ClimateJournalism #EnvironmentalJustice #LandBack #IndigenousActivism #OralHistory

“Mayflies on the move: The nuisance with an ecological benefit” ICYMI, Dr. Bill Hintz, associate professor in The University of Toledo's Department of Environmental Science, spoke with WTOL11 News about the important role mayflies play in the health of our water. He says part of this importance is due to the direct connection that the land and lake have. "So what we call this in ecology or environmental science is an aquatic-terrestrial linkage," Hintz said. "And so, everything in the water is linked to the land, and the land is linked to the water." Which means mayflies tell a larger story. "This mayfly hatch can be an indicator of how healthy those connections are in the terrestrial and the aquatic environment in Lake Erie," said Hintz. The 2024 State of the Science Workshop "Taking an Ecosystem Approach: Integrating Offshore Wind, Wildlife, and Fisheries" is accepting proposals until Friday, January 26. Sessions will focus on: ▶ Understanding wildlife and wildlife habitat: populations and distributions ▶ Offshore wind development effects and species/ecosystem responses ▶ Offshore wind development effects and fisheries: social/economic responses ▶ Monitoring, minimization, and mitigation approaches ▶ Cumulative impacts of offshore wind energy development ▶ Collaborative processes to improve development and conservation outcomes (including guidance, data sharing, and other collaborative efforts) ▶ Integration of fisheries data, marine protected species, and wildlife data to identify wind energy areas and planning areas ▶ Ecosystem interactions: physical and biological interactions and changes in ecosystems across trophic levels in response to offshore wind and other stressors https://lnkd.in/eRBR6nEX
📢 Exciting opportunity! The New York State Environmental Technical Working Group is accepting proposals for symposia, side meetings, and abstracts on offshore wind, wildlife, and fisheries for the 2024 State of the Science Workshop this July on Long Island. If you have ideas or expertise in these areas, submit by January 26th. 🌿The Eco Gerontologist-Founder, Eco Generation Model Nature-Inspired. Community-Based. Age-Integrated. Changemaker.
📣 Resource Sharing 📣 🌳 What are the Rights of Nature? "It is the recognition that our ecosystems – including trees, oceans, animals, mountains – have rights just as human beings have rights. Rights of Nature is about balancing what is good for human beings against what is good for other species, what is good for the planet as a world. It is the holistic recognition that all life, all ecosystems on our planet are deeply intertwined. Rather than treating nature as property under the law, rights of nature acknowledges that nature in all its life forms has the right to exist, persist, maintain and regenerate its vital cycles. And we – the people – have the legal authority and responsibility to enforce these rights on behalf of ecosystems. The ecosystem itself can be named as the injured party, with its own legal standing rights, in cases alleging rights violations. For indigenous cultures around the world, recognizing rights of nature is consistent with their traditions of living in harmony with nature. All life, including human life, are deeply connected. Decisions and values are based on what is good for the whole." #harmoniouslongevity #ecogerontology #natureconnectedness Nature For Health

Bereziivka City Council in Odesa Oblast became the third this year, after Taiirovska (Odesa) and Vashkivtsi (Chernivtsi), to receive a project for the Strategy of Environmental Safety and Adaptation to Climate Change until 2030, supported by SOMBRILLA and the RcErBs Fund in Lubny. We are grateful to our constant partners, the Department of Ecology at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, who actively assist communities in preparing green recovery measures. We believe that through joint efforts, we can achieve significant results in the recovery and development of our regions. In the future, we plan to involve other communities interested in implementing environmental initiatives. It is crucial not only to ensure the active participation of local authorities in the development and implementation of strategies but also to inform the public about the importance of environmental safety and involve local residents in projects. In these challenging times, it is necessary to demonstrate to active communities the tools for financing. Attracting investments to implement the measures outlined in the strategies. Funding opportunities for such measures exist, and communities should understand that there is no need to wait for the end of the war, but to act now.

We have a new paper out showing that supposedly sedentary elasmobranchs are capable of extensive movements over short timescales. It clearly illustrates the need for transboundary fishery management and conservation efforts in the Arabian Gulf. With Stephan Bruns, Shamsa M. Al Hameli.

A new opportunity to promote marine life and the issues facing the marine environment is coming soon. With a new Alderney Wildlife Trust research project funded by Sea-Changers 🙌 . Introducing The AWT Seawater Parameters Survey. The AWT has won a fund from the Sea-Changers Main Grant fund to initiate a new citizen science project, The AWT Seawater Parameters Survey, on Alderney. 🌊 The aim of this new project to collect long-term seawater parameter evidence across Alderney with the island’s community, from spring 2024. The fund has enabled the AWT to purchase equipment to regularly sample seawater with citizen scientists. 🔬 Seawater chemistry plays an important role in influencing marine habitat and species presence, abundance, distribution and health/condition. The long-term monitoring of seawater can help identify wide-scale natural trends and climate change influences (such as sea temperature increases). Limited seawater parameter information exists for Alderney and in turn, identifying issues facing its marine environment in terms of seawater chemistry is unknown. Connecting this survey with the community will provide new opportunities to promote marine life and the issues facing the marine environment. In addition, the information will be made open source to external researchers and others, to enable new engagement activities and enhance our current knowledge of our connected seas --- ✒ Post written by Dr. Mel Broadhurst-Allen 📷 Photo from Alderney Wildlife Trust Instagram page (alderneywt) taken by Abigail de Castella #Alderneyproject #livingseas #marineconservation
