The editor-in-chief and majority of editors of a key international-education journal have resigned amid an abrupt transfer in management of the publication to an unknown third party and questions about its commitment to open-access academic publishing. The mass resignation of the editorial team for the Journal of International Students has led to confusion about the future of a publication credited with advancing international-ed research and spotlighting the work of a diverse collection of scholars. In this week's Latitudes, I dig into how the incident highlights issues around both scholarly equity and financial sustainability as open-access academic publishing has expanded. Plus, a new effort to get more Black male students to study abroad; plans for a new special Homeland Security subcommittee to examine foreign malign influence on American higher education, including the development of guidelines and best practices for colleges; and throwing cold water on global mobility data. https://lnkd.in/gc3MNeXp #internationaleducation #intled #research #openaccess #academicpublishing #studyabroad #educationabroad #internationalstudents #em #iem #highereducation #highered

✨ In 2022 we created the European Press Future, an initiative to bring our Laureates to journalism #schools and #universities to foster a conversation on journalism in all its forms. 🇬🇧 Now, it took us to the UK, to the MA Applied Imagination at Central Saint Martins, University of The Arts London. 💡 Our Laureates Elena Stancu and Tina Xu held two guest lectures to interface with the students and explain what they believe journalism is, and how they practice it. Both these Laureates represent, in their own specific ways, new approaches to journalism, hyperlocal and international, focused on small stories to portray a bigger picture, and well aware of the importance and power of storytelling in their professions. 📝 Their lectures will be followed by a moment of creation, during which the #students will develop their own journalistic project and pitch it to the lecturers and journalists of the Prize. This way, the project extends further than two simple lectures and becomes something collaborative and more articulated. ➡ Learn more about our collaboration with the UAL: https://lnkd.in/dbveUKqp Many thanks to all the students and the lecturers, Richard Reynolds and Cecilia Mezzi for their help and enthusiasm! --- 📨 If you are a university or an institution for journalistic training and would like to collaborate with us, or if you are one of our Laureates and you are interested in sharing your knowledge with young professionals, reach out! #europeanpressprize #education

We are pleased to announce that Visegrad Insight is the media sponsor of this year's Visegrad Summer School. The 22nd edition of the Visegrad Summer School, an educational project recognized and respected in Europe, starts today and will be taking place in Krakow until 10 July. Visegrad Summer School since 2002 is implemented by Villa Decius Association, an independent NGO, that in its activities addresses difficult and important debates, since 2002. Over the past 22 years, the Visegrad Summer School has become not only a platform for knowledge exchange and peer discussion but also an important instrument for integrating active people from across the region. The opportunity to discuss the most difficult topics among Ambassadors, Ministers, representatives of the European Union and prominent leaders allows to learn the positions and motivations of the partners and strengthen cooperation within the region. The interdisciplinary formula and attractive class formats allow for the creation of a unique atmosphere in which international and intercultural dialogue, and joint planning of future activities become possible. This year's School continues a format of editions focusing on forecasting and designing future solutions and events. The thematic scope of consideration in the 22nd edition will be future of media and journalism in the modern world. The 22nd Visegrad Summer School will enable a group of 30 young professionals and young leaders to meet with European experts and intellectuals, deepen their knowledge, exchange ideas, experiences, and opinions. One of the speeches will be given by Wojciech Przybylski. The theme of the 22nd Visegrad Summer School is the future of the media, particularly relevant in the context of the current media transformation, with its confrontation with the challenges of individualization, polarization, the digital divide, manipulation of facts (deepfakes and fake news), media literacy and the dynamic development of artificial intelligence.

#MediaOutlet 🎤 Could you host an ABSW Media Fellow? FAQ 1. What are the ABSW Media Fellowships? A unique opportunity for practising scientists, clinicians, and engineers to spend two to six weeks working at the heart of a media outlet. 2. When does it happen? Placements generally take place in July/August/September/October to fit in with the teaching commitments of most academics. Placements can be anything from 2 to 6 weeks, full or part-time, all these details are negotiated between the media host and the Fellow once we have made the right match. 3. How much does it cost the media host? Nothing, the Fellowship is funded by the Fellow’s employer or institution. 4. Do media outlet get to choose the Fellow? Yes, detailed information on the Fellows is sent to all Media Hosts so you can rank your preferred Fellow. ABSW always try hard to ensure we have a good match. 5. If media hosts don’t have offices and work entirely remotely – does that mean they can’t host? Not at all, over the past couple of years ABSW has had entirely remote placements and they have worked extremely well. 6. Do ABSW train the Fellows? Yes, ABSW runs a journalism 101 course before the Fellows take up their placements. 7. Do the Fellows produce real published work? Yes, look at the brilliant work produced by last year’s Fellows: https://zurl.co/R8mb More information 👇 https://zurl.co/MjAi

In academics, the adage 'publish or perish' has long been a driving force. However, the pursuit of scholarly excellence has taken an unexpected turn. In 2023, the academic community witnessed a staggering milestone – over 10,000 research papers retracted, setting a disconcerting new record. 📚🔍 The allure of publications, once seen as a badge of honor, now raises questions about the quality and rigor of the research landscape. As we grapple with this unprecedented surge in retractions, it's imperative to reflect on the evolving dynamics within academia and the broader implications for knowledge dissemination. #research #publication #academicwriting #academics #academia #scientificresearch #journal #retraction #scholars https://lnkd.in/ehxch5S2
