The way that fire and water damage jobs are handled do have some similarities, but they can’t be interchanged. On fire damage jobs, confirm that only techs with at least a Fire and Smoke Restoration Technician (FSRT) certification are allowed on the site. Being Odor Control Technician (OCT) certified is also helpful. #DisasterRestoration

I spend the bulk of my professional life training fire alarm technicians how to install and program Potter addressable fire alarm systems. I do this all over the country. Today, I get to train firefighters how to use fire alarms as a part of their incident response. Too many don't understand Alarm, Trouble, Supervisory... Acknowledge, Silence Reset. Too many won't open the annunciator or control panel and scroll through events to assist in their response. Those of us in the life safety industry need to bridge these skills gaps. We need to ensure first responders understand the basic operation of the equipment we install and service. We need to engage with code officials and explain what the technology can and cannot do. The work we do as an industry is incredibly important. Automatic fire alarms save lives every day by recognizing events and informing building occupants, but at the end of the day, a human needs to interface with that equipment.

Fire extinguishers are essential equipment that can help protect you and reduce any further risk of harm or damage during a fire. On a dry powder extinguisher there’s pin on the handle that stops the extinguisher from being set off by mistake. If it’s missing, or the tamper seal is broken, it’s a sign that the extinguisher needs to be checked by an extinguisher technician. Once the pin is pulled from the extinguisher and the handle is pressed, the pressurised gas pushes downward into the siphon tube that runs from the top to the bottom of the extinguisher, and then into the discharge hose. #firesafety #safedy #thereyahaveit
