Did you know that there are only two Brutalist buildings in Orlando? One is the downtown library and the other has longtime housed AT&T’s emergency management system on Semoran, of which we have the privilege of completing a full interior #designbuild inside this 20,000 SF cast-in-place form board #Brutalist structure.   Earlier this year, Orlando Weekly sniffed out the value of this building to our city as a "Best of Orlando" entry: “This is a 1970s-era low-rider with Marcel Breuer-style windows, a crystalline, concrete flat pancake of a building crying out for a garden front and some professional TLC. This building is ripe for a creative business to magnify its potential as a Brutalist iconette with sympathetic interior design. It anchors an unstudied architectural district of Orlando, South Semoran: the front driveway to one of America's busiest airports, with a peculiar mix of local, national and international brands rivaling South Orange Blossom Trail. Let's hope this little gem gets the refresh it deserves and doesn't get mulched to become another Starbucks.”   Sadly, Interstruct Design + Build was not engaged to address the exterior of the building. We are deeply disappointed that the owner has painted the exposed concrete white and removed the architecturally significant windows.    We are committed to the principles of #adaptivereuse, and in this case, preserving a piece of Orlando’s architectural history. Whether one appreciates the style or not is secondary to its value in continuing important conversations around the role that modern architecture, specifically the Brutalist movement, played in shaping our cities and dividing neighbors. Modern architecture was meant to heal society’s woes but Brutalism symbolizes the huge impact and tragic outcomes resulting from redlining neighborhoods.    Preserving buildings preserves their stories. As the lead architect on The Glen project, I aimed to create a contemporary architectural design that would serve as an inspiration of modern living in Silver Spring. My vision was to craft a building that echoed the rhythm and vibrancy of city life, while providing a serene residential retreat for its residents. The design concept materialized through a palette of rich brick juxtaposed with dark paneling, articulates a facade that plays with depth and texture. Balconies are strategically recessed, offering private outdoor spaces that contribute to the building's dynamic exterior. Large bay windows not only invite natural light deep into the living spaces, but also project a welcoming glow in the evening, symbolizing the warmth of home amid the urban landscape. The integration of green spaces and landscaping was not an afterthought; it was an intrinsic part of the design, softening the transition between the public thoroughfare and private residences. Accessibility and community connectivity are central to The Glen's philosophy. The proximity to public transit options and the Forest Glen Metro, is accentuated by green areas underscoring the ease with which residents can navigate the urban grid. In essence, the design for The Glen is a tribute to contemporary urban living, aiming to offer a balanced lifestyle that's in harmony with the environment, inviting, and thoroughly connected. It's All in the Technique: Join us as we take a journey through the reinvigorated Technique building in #Clerkenwell EC1.   Fashioned from the amalgamation of two historic buildings, a gin distillery, and a bank, in the heart of Clerkenwell, this architectural marvel has been reimagined by architects Buckley Gray Yeoman.   The remaining floors, spanning from the 1st to the 3rd, offer versatile workspaces ranging from 12,411 – 45,012 Ft². Each unit boasts lofty ceilings of 3+ metres and abundant natural light, creating an environment conducive to productivity and well-being. Crowning this transformation is an expansive communal rooftop space, reminiscent of a penthouse, revealed in its entirety at the conclusion of the film – it’s worth the wait. Highlights: • The first floor features a private gallery space, providing a unique and secluded area for artistic endeavours. • The second floor showcases the timeless charm of beautiful cross laminated timber (CLT) wooden beams adding character to the workspace. • The 12,411 Ft² third floor is meticulously fully fitted by Whitepaper ensuring a sophisticated and functional environment for occupants ready to pull up a pew immediately. • The pinnacle of the structure, the top floor, serves as the proverbial icing on the cake.
