Twenty years later by Charlie Donlea #motivation to #work I love to discover among hundreds of thousands book recommendations a fiction about journalists. Although, this book is about FICTION journalistic investigation it’s covering REAL journalistic work in a great way! At some point, we are like #police detectives 🕵️ When something happens we start digging. And usually the story turns upside-down to the end. Each time. As least, from my experience. Meaning, the facts we have at the beginning don’t mean the same things closer to the end. Even more, you should be ready to the twist after every discovery you’d make. My analogy of journalist/police work wasn’t accidental. You will see it clearly if you read ‘Twenty years later’. But! The difference between a #journalist and a detective is about our purpose. For us, journalists, it’s more about a path to the truth, as for policemen it’s more about the finding the truth. You Can’t Handle the Truth. Maybe. I learnt about a new form of storytelling last week. Verbatim theatre. The script is created from the precise words spoken by real people in real-life situations. Material comes from interviews, court transcripts, public speeches and other original sources. It doesn't rely on the writer’s imagination. When you write from your imagination you are writing from your experience and recollection of how people live. If you use the evidence of what actually happened, the story is likely to include elements you’d never imagined. Is this form of storytelling more compelling? How do you like your truth? Raw, unfiltered and unvarnished? Or entrusted to fiction - a truth inside a lie? (a big thank you to author and playwright, Antoinette Moses for hosting last week's Tilted Women Reading Group, Lucy Farrant and the NORWICH ARTS CENTRE)

Someone — I forget who — once said that news is a surprise. I’m not sure that’s always the case, though; many of the front-page headlines I come across each day are anything but surprising. That doesn’t necessarily make them any less important. However, I do agree that the most interesting stories tell us something we weren’t expecting (or weren’t aware of). They tend to be counterintuitive. In that spirit, here are three surprising stories that I’ve came across recently.
