Africa presently contributes 0.2% to the global startup value, with a substantial 89% of foreign venture capital concentrated in four countries—Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and Egypt—primarily in fintech. The 'Timbuktoo Africa Innovation Fund,' launched by the UNDP in collaboration with African governments, aims to address these disparities by investing $1 billion in 1,000 startups over the next decade. The fund has identified eight cities as innovation hubs, with Kigali designated as the health tech hub. The initiative represents a significant step towards creating a more inclusive and diversified startup landscape in Africa, holding the potential to redefine the continent's role in the global startup ecosystem.

But the labour mobility journey is not without its challenges. Workers are often unprepared for the stark realities of labour migration -- the strain of separation from loved ones and adapting to new environments. For many, these strains can be crippling. It is in these situations that lifelines for workers and their families at home are critical. Brief updates to colleagues, associates, and friends. Over the past several months I have been based in Sri Lanka busily engaged with several projects and growing personally and professionally - at times further learning my limitations. Alas, this time coming to an end. On the professional front I have endeavoured to keep busy with a few assignments, one focused on human rights and the environment and the other connected to the agribusiness sector, non-traditional export-oriented crops and a tie-in to philanthropy. In addition, I have continued to be engaged in lending formal and informal support to a host of local NGOs in addition to a few international initiatives where I have lent a hand. Personally, I have been project managing the renovation of a house that my wife and I have owned in the Colombo suburbs. This a 90-plus-year-old colonial-era bungalow more commonly referred to in Sri Lanka as a 'walawwa'. This is a grand old house that in a way had seen a better decade; we had used it as a retreat when we came to the island, an occasional home for my late mother-in-law and a place to host some important family functions. Breathing new life into this house has been like a renewal of our commitment to the community and ourselves. Projects are complete of near completion and I will soon take leave of Sri Lanka and head back to my home in Canada to spend much-needed time with family. En route, I will spend a few days in the United Arab Emirates, following up on past assignments focused on business development philanthropy and partnerships whilst also reconnecting with some people near and dear to me. In addition, as schedules allow, I will make a brief sojourn to New York to participate in a UNGA78 side event focused on SDG 5, 10, 16 and 17. The past months have been rewarding and at times tiring. Once back in Canada, I will take a very brief holiday - maybe an early fall road trip with my wife - and then jump into the fray so to speak exploring new opportunities around social impact, philanthropy and partnerships both domestically and internationally. 🏢𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬: Bridging Gaps & Building Futures🌍 Last week, during my trip to Govuro, I had the privilege to check the status of one of the ongoing constructions of new community centres. As part of the Local Development Agreements, 12 distinct communities within Govuro and Inhassoro made the choice to prioritize the establishment of these centres. While some are raising eyebrows and questioning such a choice, I would like to help you delve into why it's more than just a building: 𝟏. 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲: At its core, a community centre is the beating heart of any neighbourhood. It's a place where generations come together, where the young learn from the old, and where everyone can gather irrespective of their background or status. 𝟐. 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐂𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐜 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: A space where community members can engage in discussions, hold meetings, or even vote. It can serve as the epicentre for local governance and decision-making. 𝟑. 𝐂𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡: These centres will often house educational workshops, and skill development classes, and will provide resources that many might not have access to at home. They can serve as launching pads for both individual and community growth. 𝟒. 𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 & 𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Community centres can double up as spaces where traditions are taught, cultural events are celebrated, and where the identity of a community is both preserved and flourished. When a community opts for a centre, it's not just choosing a building; it's choosing unity, growth, and a brighter future. It's an investment not just in infrastructure, but in the very soul of the community. So, I applaud and support these community decisions, for they stem from a vision far beyond the immediate.
