As I begin the educational phase of the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) 2024, a landmark initiative celebrating 61 years, founded in New York, to enrich our city’s youth. This year, I’m particularly excited to highlight its profound impact on the health sector, especially how it’s influencing Historically Black Colleges and Universities (#HBCUs) to foster a new, diverse generation of healthcare professionals. This interview took place 9 year ago and they've continued to grow sine then. Highlighting that this year: (https://lnkd.in/eyayicGw) #howarduniversity The importance of programs like SYEP in shaping the healthcare landscape cannot be overstated. By offering young individuals from varied backgrounds a platform to explore and kickstart careers in healthcare, SYEP is not just creating job opportunities but is actively contributing to a more inclusive and diverse healthcare environment. This is crucial for bringing different perspectives and solutions to the table, ultimately leading to better health outcomes for all. It’s crucial that more local colleges and high schools follow this exemplary model. Providing students with a foundation in healthcare, similar to CSI’s nursing program and Curtis High School’s nursing path, can significantly impact our healthcare system’s future, making it more inclusive, diverse, and effective. Empowering youth to voice their preferred paths is crucial in shaping a future where they feel confident and supported in their career choices. Encouraging young individuals to express their ambitions and interests fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility for their futures, guiding them towards fulfilling and impactful careers. This empowerment is not just about offering choices but about providing the tools, knowledge, and support to explore and solidify these paths confidently. #CSIMGT725,#ProfTimRn,#CSIHealthcareManagement, #SYEP2024,#DYCD https://lnkd.in/eyayicGw

🎉 Meet Lewis Williams, one of our incredible #ElevatingTheSafetyNet medical school scholars! 🩺 Lewis is one of eight students awarded a full-ride medical school scholarship, allowing him to chase his dream of becoming a doctor without the burden of debt. It was Lewis’s love for science, learning about the disparities affecting African American communities, and recognizing the healthcare gaps in our system that inspired him to pursue medicine. He is determined to represent and uplift those from underserved communities. This year, four of our L.A. Care Elevating the Safety Net Scholars, including Lewis, will attend Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, which recently opened its own independent medical school—thanks in part to a $5 million grant from L.A. Care. 🎓 This initiative is not only working to increase the number of physicians in the healthcare safety net, but it is also striving to increase diversity among the physician workforce in L.A. County. Research shows racial and ethnic diversity in the physician workforce improves outcomes in communities of color. We are proud to support Lewis on his journey to make a difference! 💛 Want to learn more about the eight scholars? New Blog Post Alert! "Affirmative Action Matters in Public Health" by Karol Dean, PhD, and Ronisha Edwards-Elliott, MSW, Mia Bonds, Jessica Coffee, and Mia Hayford A year has passed since the Supreme Court’s decision on affirmative action in college admissions, and its impacts on community health are becoming increasingly apparent. This ruling has significant implications for the diversity of health care providers and the quality of care in under-resourced communities. At Health & Medicine, we nurture college students (through our AHEC program) and graduate students (through our Schweitzer Fellowship program) who will be affected by this decision. As we engage with these students to build a workforce committed to health equity, the Supreme Court’s affirmative action decision will shape the demographic makeup of future health care workers, potentially limiting the representation and cultural familiarity needed to effectively address inequities in health care delivery and health outcomes. 💡 Read the full article and learn more about the vital connection between education and health equity on our website 🔗: https://bit.ly/3L9ORK3 #HealthEquity #PublicHealth #AffirmativeAction #HealthcareDiversity #HealthJustice #HMPRG

Executive Director, Members and Early Intervention at St Vincent de Paul Society NSW / Fulbright Scholar for NFP Leadership
🚨 Aaaaaaand we’re done! 🚨 For 4 years now I’ve been working away at a PhD in public health at the George Institute and the UNSW’s faculty of Medicine. ⚕️ Specifically I’ve been researching how to cut through the bureaucracy governing clinical trials. 🧬🧪 It’s taken a lot of weekends, and long nights and early mornings but it’s now submitted. Still a bit to go but the end is in sight. 🎓 #thesis #university #phd #medicine #publichealth #clinicaltrials
