Horeca, A small yet promising event. I had the opportunity of visiting HORECA - Beirut yesterday, and I was amazed but also a little bit disappointed. The event, which offered visitors a glimpse into the new trends and technologies within the FMCG sector, was well-organized despite its modest size. It caught to my attention the absence of some of the main players in the sector which is a miscalculation that has consequences for all stakeholders. First, the absence of big players deprives attendees of the opportunity to engage with leading brands. These companies often set the standard for innovation and quality in the FMCG market, and their presence at such events is an added value. From the perspective of the organizers, the absence of big players represents a missed opportunity to elevate the importance of the exhibition and attract a larger audience. By securing the participation of major players in the industry, organizers can boost the event's reputation. Accordingly, this will be translated into bigger profitability, ensuring its sustainability and growth in the long run. Adding to the above, these companies play a significant role when involved in events, not only benefits their own businesses but also contributes to the growth of the entire supply chain, from producers to consumers. In conclusion, while the HORECA may have been small in scale, its impact could have been significantly greater with the participation of these players. Their absence represents a missed opportunity for attendees, organizers, and the industry as a whole. Moving forward, it is essential for all involved parties to work together to ensure the participation of key players in future editions of the exhibition. Just returned from #WineParis and I have a few reflections to share. 1. Accommodation in Paris is much more affordable than other wine fairs like Prowein and VinItaly. It’s a big international city with millions of annual tourists: a trade fair isn’t going to strain accomodation availability. A hotel within walking distance of the fair was only €150 a night compared to €350/€400 a night at other fairs. Plus, booking restaurants in Dusseldorf can be a nightmare. 2. Transportation to and from the fair was pain-free and the public transport system was not thrown into chaos. 3. The crowd was professional and there was a focus on purchasing rather than an all-out "booze fest" atmosphere. 4. The ticketing and scanning of badges system needs improvement. It was a hassle to scan the badge every time you went from Hall 5.1 to any other hall. 5. Scheduling of the fair during Lunar New Year was a gamble that didn't pay off. I thought Asian clients who celebrate the Lunar NY would take the opportunity to travel to Paris, but I didn't see this. 6. Paris itself was a value-add for buyers or importers who could bring partners or extended family for a visit. 7. The Italian pavilion in Hall 2 was always full of foot traffic, while the remaining Italian exhibitors in Hall 5.1 saw dramatically reduced traffic. Hopefully, next year they can combine all Italian exhibitors together or at least put them in adjacent pavilions. Overall, a positive experience that I'm sure the other "Big 2" fairs can observe and pivot to ensure they remain relevant. #wineparis2024
