Introducing Adalia "Dolly" Fernandez, our Payroll Lead! ⚡️ Q: Tell us a little bit about what you do at the Chargers. A: I'm the Payroll Lead for the Los Angeles Chargers. I put smiles on faces and put hard earned wages in their bank accounts. Q: How did you get started? A: I started my career path as a paid intern, for an Aerospace company while in high school. During my internship, the company paid my tuition while I acquired my degree in Administration of Justice. I gave my full dedication to learn on the job while I worked in most departments. During that time, I decided that the HR/Accounting department was most interesting and challenging to me, as it was different every day. Q: What is the most rewarding part of your job? A: The most rewarding part of my job is helping my customers, our employees. Q: Any advice for those trying to get a job in sports? A: When starting your career, be a sponge and learn everything you can. Then add those learnt items to your life's tool belt of knowledge, as no one can take that away from you. Always give it your all, even when no one is looking. Integrity speaks volumes. #workinsports #payroll

What a whirlwind month! 😅 I'm now into end of second month for my internship, and the learning curve has been steep yet incredibly rewarding. From mastering basic Excel skills to handling essential tasks like keying in EA forms for workers, every day has been a new adventure. One highlight was when my HR manager entrusted me with the task of revamping the office and operational staff induction slides. Leveraging my familiarity with Canva, I eagerly contributed to enhancing the presentation, making it more engaging and informative. Another significant responsibility was assisting in registering 60 new foreign workers for their CIMB accounts. Ensuring their passports and permits were valid and accompanying them to the bank was a meticulous yet fulfilling process. Making calls to candidates to confirm their availability turned out to be surprisingly enjoyable. What once seemed daunting in the initial days of my internship now feels like second nature! The Assistant HR Manager entrusted me with the responsibility of compiling and inputting details of outstanding payments for resigned workers from 2022 to 2024, to be included in her payroll report. This month, I had the privilege of guiding three new workers on a factory tour, offering them a warm welcome to our company culture. Additionally, I was entrusted with conducting HR office inductions for two new interns, a testament to the trust and responsibility bestowed upon me. Each day presents new opportunities for growth, and I'm committed to honing my skills and absorbing as much knowledge as possible. During my first internship, I had the opportunity to dive into the practical aspects of HR management, and one concept that really stood out was the Sandwich Rule. For those unfamiliar, the Sandwich Rule in leave management counts the weekends or holidays between two leave days as part of the leave itself. For example, if you take leave on a Friday and the following Monday, both the weekend days might also be considered as leave, making it a four-day leave instead of just two. This policy plays a crucial role in ensuring smooth operations and minimizing disruptions, helping organizations maintain productivity while managing employee absences effectively. Understanding these finer details of HR policies has been an eye-opening experience and is a testament to how much there is to learn beyond textbooks. Often interns are treated as slave labour: "Interns recount 'horror stories' of being overworked and treated 'like dust'" When we've had interns in my firms we have always treated them the same, intern or not, they're contributing plus they are often engaging with customers so they need to be treated respectfully or they will generate negative word of mouth not positive ones about the firm. We also always paid them. However many firms seem to pile them high and not pay them and treat them like human bodies not intelligent future leaders! They take advantage of their need for work and abuse them. Those firms should be called out and stopped and interns should be able to check which firms have good reputations for treating interns respectfully. What do you think?
