Last week kicked off NESN's 2024 Mentoring Program. Our cohort consists of 10 pairs of mentors & mentees from multiple departments across the company. As part of our kick-off event, our Young Professionals ERG, NESN Playmakers, led a panel discussion on Careers in Sports. Each panelist spoke about their journey to the sports industry, the challenges they've faced as well as what keeps them motivated, and lastly provided advice to the group on ways to further a sports-focused career. Thank you to our panelists and moderator, and to the entire mentoring cohort for a wonderful launch event!

Mentoring can foster a sense of belonging and forge a sense of personal identity. Regardless of a young person’s specific needs or circumstances, all youth need to know who they are as individuals and that they belong in this world. Too many American youths are growing up without these core aspects of human development, and in their isolation, they often drift into antisocial or violent behaviors. Mentoring is a cornerstone of a healthy society that helps all citizens contribute and find their positive path.
"Helping vulnerable public school students experience C.A.K.E. (compassion, attention, kindness & encouragement) in just 1 hr/week since 2002."
We support the youth of Hawaii by providing them with peer and adult mentors with the objective that they will strive in their life, and career and a better version of themselves. Happy National Mentoring Month!

Here's a glimpse of their value: Wisdom and Experience: Mentors typically have a wealth of experience in their field. Networking: They often have extensive networks and can introduce you to valuable contacts, opening doors to opportunities that might otherwise be challenging to access. They can provide motivation and guidance, helping you navigate through obstacles and challenges. Skill Development: Mentors can help you identify and develop specific skills necessary for your goals. Their guidance can fast-track your learning process. Accountability: Having someone to be accountable to can be a powerful motivator. Mentors often act as a source of accountability, ensuring you stay on track with your goals and commitments. Confidence Boost: Knowing that someone experienced believes in your abilities can significantly boost your confidence. Former federal prosecutor focusing on health care fraud, data analytics, and white-collar criminal defense, based on 20+ years experience in law and journalism
In case it's helpful, here is some of the advice I offered yesterday or typically tell law students or new lawyers: Find a lawyer who does what you'd like to do and try asking for a coffee or a Zoom. Most people won't respond, and that's fine. But some will respond, and you'll learn some things and you'll make a contact who might be able to help later on. Go to court. Many law students who want to become litigators have never been to court. Check the online dockets, find something interesting, observe, and introduce yourself afterwards to a lawyer who you thought did a good job. Try developing a niche. Everyone looks like a good lawyer on their law-firm bio pages, and it's hard to distinguish yourself that way. But if you have a niche, it's easier to stand out. Learn how to use a spreadsheet. Most lawyers are not good with this, but this is where a lot of evidence now is. Knowing how to use and analyze data will give you a competitive advantage down the road. Pitch a webinar. Think of something that you really know, or think of a way to draw lessons from your experience. Many bar associations would like to do more content, and it's a way to build your network and stand out. Hope this helps!
Thanks to everyone who came out to our 2024 Mentorship Kickoff event! Nothing beats a personal meet-and-greet. As we continue the year, we hope our mentees continue to grow in their professions with the guidance of our awesome mentors! Pairings are still available to all of those who would like to participate as a mentor/mentee - reach out to AABAChicagoMentorship@gmail.com for more information
