Neste and South Korean chemical company LOTTE chemical are teaming up to make chemicals and plastics more sustainable. The companies embark on a strategic collaboration to replace fossil resources with renewable raw materials in the manufacturing of chemicals and plastics. This will enable products and applications with a lower carbon footprint compared to those produced from fossil resources. The collaboration will see Neste providing renewable Neste RE™, a raw material for chemicals and plastics, that is made from 100% renewable raw materials. Lotte Chemical will use Neste RE at the company’s Korean sites to produce various common types of plastics and chemicals in Lotte Chemical’s broad product portfolio. These plastics and chemicals may be used in multiple applications and in supply chains for various products ranging from packaging to construction and from textiles to electronics. The quality and performance of the end products remain unchanged. SYNTHOS SIGNS A MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING WITH OMV December 13, 2023 Oświęcim, Poland – Synthos has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with OMV, an Austrian multinational integrated oil, gas, and petrochemicals company. Under the MOU, the two companies will cooperate on the long-term supply of sustainable raw materials, with a focus on sustainable butadiene for synthetic rubber used in tire manufacturing. Synthos and OMV are committed to a long-term cooperation on sustainable butadiene production until 2030, according to the ISCC-Plus standard, initially using palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD) and used cooking oil as feedstock. In addition, the MOU commits to future cooperation on circular butadiene derived from pyrolysis oil obtained from end-of-life tires and underlines the transition of both companies to a more circular economy. Zbigniew Warmuz, CEO at Synthos: “In December 2021, we adopted our Sustainable Development Strategy, in which we commit to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions per gigajoule (GJ) by 28% by 2030, reach zero carbon emissions by 2050 and produce 100% sustainable products by 2030. The cooperation with OMV is proof of our commitment to sustainability, which we can only achieve together with other leading companies in the value chain. Together, we can support our customers, the world’s leading tire manufacturers, to achieve their sustainability goals in terms of net zero emissions and high-performance tires with a lower carbon footprint.” Matteo Marchisio, Vice President Synthos Synthetic Rubber, emphasized the importance of sustainable raw materials for the tire industry: “The demand from leading tire manufacturers for sustainable synthetic rubber is increasing rapidly. We are committed to delivering tailor-made solutions to best meet our customers’ needs, be it ISCC PLUS certified material, bio-based rubber, or customized products that we develop exclusively with our partners”. Synthos has already successfully received and tested sustainable butadiene produced by OMV in its steam cracker at the Burghausen refinery in Germany, which received full ISCC PLUS certification in March 2022. Daniela Vlad, Executive Vice President Chemicals and Materials at OMV: “Our tie-up with Synthos clearly shows that OMV is re-inventing essentials for sustainable living. To achieve this, we have a strategic goal to become a leading European producer of sustainable feedstocks for chemicals production. ISB Global pushes for turquoise hydrogen. Turquoise hydrogen, derived from waste plastics, offers a sustainable solution for unrecyclable plastics that are difficult or costly to recycle and lack a profitable secondary market. Positioned between green hydrogen (from renewable energy) and blue hydrogen (from fossil fuels), turquoise hydrogen aims to lower its production costs for affordability. Hydrogen as a fuel has several advantages: it only produces water as a by product, unlike fossil fuels that emit large volumes of CO2, and it can be stored and reused quickly. However, the potential of hydrogen relies on developing clean and cost-effective production methods. Current commercial production methods are still not widely used. To make turquoise hydrogen commercially viable and sustainable, it is essential for governments and industries to fund research and development. This will not only reduce emissions but also promote the circular economy by sustainably disposing of waste plastics.

Working together, the strategic partnership made it possible to create a new line of renewable plastic lab #consumables: Eppendorf consumables BioBased. The consumables, e.g. tubes, are manufactured using Neste RETM, a feedstock produced from 100% renewable raw materials, for example used cooking oil. The consumables thereby represent a sustainable choice for labs seeking to reduce their carbon footprint by replacing fossil crude oil in the value chain.
