This week, Michael O'Leary slammed #SAF. A man who doesn't mince his words, he oftentimes shares what most think but wouldn't dare to air. Decarbonising aviation is a gigantic task. SAF will not solve the problem as governments will tax emissions to encourage SAF demand and other innovations, but supply will not keep up. Assuming OEM supply issues start to alleviate, older, less fuel efficient aircraft values will be hit. The time for lessors to be assessing and hedging carbon-induced residual value risk is now. Did you know that there are only 8 approved #SAF pathways cleared for use in aircraft? These pathways are definitely not the same as feedstocks (as tempting as it may be to assume that they are). There in fact 42 approved feedstocks for these 8 pathways. There are plans afoot to get more pathways and feedstocks added which is very much needed to ensure the SAF sector supports to the aviation sector in the decades ahead. This is testament to the difficulty in the aviation sector's #energytransition. As for now, CirculAIRity will stick with our drop-in SAF pathway and continue move at pace.. #SAF #sustainableaviation #sustainableaviationfuel #avgeek #airlines

Last year 90 times more #SAF was sold than actually produced (not a typo). This one graphic illustrates the sheer scale of the challenges ahead of the #aviation sector's #energytransition. This is an order of magnitude away from where the #aviationindustry needs to be. It does simultaneously speaks volumes of the aspiration and action already taking place to make these ambitious goals a reality. Aviation Regulatory Update: April 30, 2024. The FAA announced on April 26 a new rule to reduce carbon particle emissions from aircraft engines. The rule sets limits on the amount of emissions allowed and is intended to reduce the impact of contrails on the climate. A major challenge to using SAF is its availability. Until there is guaranteed availability, airplane engines (and the seals within them) need to work with both fossil fuels and SAF. At this point, there is no reliability as to what type of fuel may be available when a plane needs to re-fuel. The plane could fill up with SAF but then need to re-fuel with fossil fuels at the next destination. This means there would be a mixture of fuels going through the engine and that the elastomers would need to work with both fuel types. Research continues. https://prker.co/3OsQ1lg #Aviation #SAF
