🌿A Hard Truth🌿 . Per capita chickens are the most abused animal in the world. Think about it, the billions upon billions of birds that never see the light of day because they are living in warehouses and being used for egg and meat production. 🌿 The industrial farming model is failing chickens, it is failing us ecologically, it is a model vulnerable to disease (hello giant outbreaks of AI every year in mega warehouses across the US) it CAN be different. 🌿 We are holing up a light for what is possible. There is no certification for how we farm, we are beyond any title or need to be checked on - our birds are living real lives, lives that we would want to live if we were them. 🌿 We rotationally pasture “graze” our chickens and they are outside every day of their lives after they are large enough from our brooders. Our birds are not creating ecological issues, they are adding nutrients to our soil and making our pastures more lush and green every year. They are truly free and get to explore and move about in the ways they want to. They get to have the enrichment of curiosity, adventure, scratching, dust bathing, sun bathing. They live the good life - the real life they were intended to live. No cages are here, no beaks are trimmed here there is no need, the birds do not feel scarcity or lack - they do not fight or attack one another. 🌿 The phrase Animal Welfare can mean so many different things to people. The more we slow down and think about it - the more we see how broken the larger industrial food model is. Animal welfare to us means animals getting to live in a way alongside humans that is in harmony with how they naturally want to live. No lack, no scarcity, in complete communion with the seasons. 🌿 What does animal welfare mean to you? BALE GRAZING BENEFITS ➕ Sam Beaumont of certified Gowbarrow Hall Farm explains why he uses #balegrazing. Bale grazing improves soil health, adding organic matter that can be trampled in by the animals, and increases worm activity and carbon sequestration, while providing the animals with a natural diet of pasture. It extends the grazing season and means that animals can be kept out for longer, sometimes all year round. Farmers implementing this system cite motivations relating to cost reductions, soil carbon management and animal health as key motivations.
