Today is brought to you by 'coffee' which refers to various tropical African shrubs or trees of the genus Coffea, especially C. arabica or C. canephora, widely cultivated in the tropics for their seeds that are dried, roasted, and ground to prepare a stimulating aromatic drink   It's also a good example on how intellectual property and business interact. The video below is well worth a watch. It’s from a well-known coffee expert James Hoffman of Square Mile Coffee Roasters, but it’s also a really great description of how Nestle have maintained a competitive advantage on coffee pods through their patents (on pods) and trade secrets (on grinding) and how their competitors are forced to compete through design arounds and through using better coffee. I.e. given the same coffee in a pod, the Nestle pod will make a better drink than their competitors. We're very impressed by the level of research that went into the IP side of this video. This morning, while walking my dogs, I overheard a conversation between two elderly ladies. One mentioned they would brew coffee when they got home but lamented, "Oh, but we don't have luxury coffee. Our capsules are finished." It made me ponder why people equate capsule coffee with luxury. It seems to be more about convenience and commodities rather than taste or the product's lifecycle. It's unfortunate that capsule coffee is often perceived as the pinnacle of quality. In reality, specialty coffee stands out for its sustainability, deliberate consumption, and exclusivity. It’s about savoring the simplicity and richness of each cup. Luckily, consumers are increasingly becoming more knowledgeable about coffee and are recognizing the gaps in the coffee capsule offerings. Specialty coffee lovers enjoy adjusting and personalizing elements like water temperature, pressure, and brew time to suit their tastes. This process is something we deeply appreciate and expect. It feels disappointing when we can't engage in these adjustments. It's more than a habit; it's a cherished ritual. Furthermore, consumer education has quickly become a prevalent feature of specialty coffee. This was partly to counter the perception of elitism and to include more people. Educating consumers on the complexities, differentiation, and sustainability of specialty coffee has become essential to thrive in this exclusive market.
