People often ask me…what do you think of (insert latest dietary trend) diet? My first question is “what are you trying to accomplish?”. Also consider what medical conditions are present before embarking on a new dietary pattern. #AllianceRx Dietitian Program has been providing nutrition counseling for individuals with ADPKD who have started taking Jynarque for the past year. I’ve been surprised at the number of people following a high protein diet, which is contraindicated with polycystic kidney disease. People often think that the latest fad diets will be good for them, and don’t necessarily consider their specific medical conditions and the impact this eating pattern may have. As discussed in the podcast, consider the science behind dietary recommendations - especially when taking advice from social media. In doubt? Work with a a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist who is uniquely qualified to guide you towards the best diet for your medical condition(s). https://lnkd.in/gBaEZ9-V. “The heavy protein consumption in this diet and the very high intake amount of red meat are detrimental to kidney health. It is a pattern of eating that increases the kidneys workload, produces more toxins that the kidneys need to clean out and it promotes a very acidic body balance…there is no happy ending here for kidney health and PKD on a Carnivore diet”. Because of the restrictive dietary pattern, a Carnivore Diet is deficient in fiber, vitamin C, and calcium. It falls short of many other vitamins and minerals like vitamin A, E, folate and potassium. Highlights of the Carnivore Diet: 1) It has a very high acid production. More acid = more kidney problems 2) Heavier kidney workload. 3) Higher level of absorbable phosphorus. 4) More toxins/waste are produced. 5) A high inflammatory dietary pattern. 6) Low in plant-based antioxidants. 7) High in the components that make uric acid. It is a stone-promoting dietary pattern.
