While it’s encouraging to hear about Vo Van Nguyen and the positive strides being made in regenerative agriculture, it’s critical to address the underlying issue of sustainability within Nestlé's coffee sourcing practices. A staggering 80% of Nescafé's coffee is not sustainably sourced, and alarmingly, 99.9% of Nestlé’s leading coffee brand, Nestlé Sunrise in India, falls into the same category. This raises significant questions about the authenticity and effectiveness of the Nescafé Plan 2030. Although achieving over 20% of coffee sourced from farmers practicing regenerative agriculture is a step in the right direction, it’s essential for Nestlé to take a more aggressive approach to ensure that a larger percentage of its products are sourced sustainably. The company’s commitment to the five pillars of regenerative agriculture is commendable, but without a robust action plan to address the current sustainability gaps in their supply chain, these initiatives may risk being little more than marketing rhetoric. Transparency and accountability are crucial — consumers and stakeholders deserve to know how Nestlé plans to bridge the gap between its current sourcing practices and its sustainability goals. Moving forward, Nestlé should prioritize making sustainable sourcing the norm, not the exception, and ensure that all its coffee offerings reflect a genuine commitment to environmental and social responsibility.

Meet Vo Van Nguyen, a coffee farmer in Vietnam who's embracing regenerative agriculture. This holistic approach aims to nurture biodiversity, water, and soil, and to benefit communities. Intercropping has increased Vo Van Nguyen's income thanks to the additional revenue from pepper plants. Coffee remains his primary source, but pepper plants provide valuable supplementary income. In 2023, over 20% of Nescafé's coffee came from farmers adopting regenerative agriculture practices. We're proud to support their transition through the Nescafé Plan 2030.

Very cool to be featured in this collaboration between Wikifarmer and Regeneration Academy! In my article, I explore the benefits and challenges of permanent cover crops in semi-arid climates. I also share some practical tips to help farmers monitor cover crop development and biodiversity over time. 

"Do we need a better agricultural system to feed the world? The answer is yes." Food is responsible for a third of all global emissions, but Regenerative Agriculture offers a way of reducing emissions from our food system at the same time as regenerating ecosystems and removing carbon 🥕 The challenge for Regenerative Agriculture is one of scale – can it produce enough food for our growing population?
