Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month at work✨ National Hispanic Heritage month is annually celebrated from September 15 to October 15 and recognizes the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States. ❓If you’re unsure how to celebrate at work, don't assume...ask team members how they want to celebrate. Empowering Diversity through Design: Celebrating Black History Month. 🌟 Black History Month through Design: Reflecting on my time at Meta, I had the privilege of leading the Global rebrand of one of Meta's largest ERGs, Black@. 🚀 Innovation in Diversity: In the tech and creative industry, diversity is not just important; it's indispensable. Diverse perspectives are the driving force behind creativity and the key to building products that resonate globally. 🎨 Crafting a Visual Identity: Stepping outside my daily responsibilities, I led the development of the new brand identity for Black@. The design team collaborated with regional and sub-groups, delving into the rich tapestry of cultures, histories, and identities that define the Global Black workforce at Meta. 🌍 A New Era: The rebrand's debut during Black History Month in 2021 marked a transformative moment. Its impact resonated beyond our offices, becoming an inspiring symbol for other organizations, emphasizing the pivotal role of intentional design in fostering inclusivity. 🤝 Acknowledging Partnerships: This transformative journey wouldn't have been possible without the incredible collaboration of Nekesha Green, Zaria Clemmons, Kimberly Colter, and Toni Coleman. 👏 Ongoing Commitment: The design-led journey continues, reinforcing my commitment to creating spaces where every voice is not just heard but celebrated. https://lnkd.in/g8JH6y3h

The AfroTech 2023 conference, the largest Black tech conference, showcased innovation, inspiration, and connection. The three top takeaways from the conference were: 1) the growing interest in generative AI and its potential to help the world work, with sessions and workshops exploring its capabilities and ethical standards; 2) the crumbling of barriers to entry in the tech industry, creating a promise of inclusivity and accessibility for underrepresented communities; and 3) the shift towards authentic networking, where attendees were encouraged to bring their authentic selves and build genuine connections. ⭐️ FREE RESOURCE DROP AHEAD ⭐️ Ahead of #BlackHistoryMonth I am re-sharing a resource from the vault of Swarm Strategy! Back in 2022 I conceptualized #RacialJusticeRecipes – a combination of my passion for cooking and using food as a tool to bring folks together, with providing people tangible steps to center practices rooted in racial justice in your day-to-day life. A #racialjusticerecipe is designed to be used like any other recipe — it's a roadmap, it's a guide to inform organizational policies and culture — rooted in equity and liberation. Each recipe addresses a specific area of racial justice, for example: unrooting Anti-Blackness, calling out not-so "micro"aggressions, intersectionality, white supremacy culture characteristics, etc. and shares tools aka ingredients that you can use to cook up a strategy to begin assessing and addressing racial equity. These recipes are not meant to be prescriptive "fix it" list, instead they offer a framework where you can then add in your own seasoning, or spice, to make the recipe your own for the specific needs of your organization. As Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives are under a microscope now more than ever, it feels important to share how people leaders can uplift people from marginalized communities as planning for cultural celebrations begins for 2024. Now is a moment to lean into authenticity, and remember that tokenism and weaponizing folks identity against them causes real harm to people from under represented communities. This recipe from February 2022 addresses the reality of the moment we are in now in 2024 by asking the simmering questions: 👉🏾 What is tokenism and how do organizations perpetuate it — particularly during cultural heritage months? 👉🏾 How can organizations celebrate and honor cultural heritage months — and the people they celebrate — without tokenizing their employees, clients and customers from those communities? I am an example of Black History in the making. Every day, I wake up grateful to work in tech, but I consistently have to remember that I am one of the lucky ones. It's no secret that African Americans remain one of the most underrepresented groups in the sector. Ten years ago, African Americans made up around 7% of all tech workers, and when I started at Meta in 2022, that number rose to 11%. As the great philosopher Common once said, "Slow motion is better than no motion." But even with increased efforts in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, African Americans still face significant challenges in the tech sector. If you make it through some of the known algorithmic biases in recruiting practices and software that may prevent you from getting the job due to a "non-traditional" name, you might still have to deal with microaggressions in the workplace. I could probably retire if I had $100 for every time someone was shockingly impressed by how "well-spoken" I was. Or, you might deal with imposture syndrome, which is increasingly common when you don't see others who look like you in these roles to serve as mentors, and because all your life, you've had to work twice as hard to get half of what everyone else gets. This Black History Month, while it's great to celebrate the progress we've made in becoming a more equitable country, don't forget the many challenges that African Americans still face socially and professionally. It's easy to be part of the problem; the challenge comes in learning how to be part of the solution.

FEARLESS FRIDAY As women’s history month comes to a close, I find myself asking the same question now that I asked at the end of Black History Month. Why do we stop celebrating/uplifting/recognizing at a month? We deserve more than a month out of the year to be recognized for the amazing things we’ve contributed to making the world a better place. What’s preventing us from celebrating all year long? Why wait for February and March to highlight trailblazers of the past, present, that empower and inspire those of the future? So, on this FEARLESS FRIDAY, I invite you to think about how you can keep it going. While organizing and throwing huge events and parties are fun, they aren’t required. It could be: + Host a Work Win shower for your colleague or bestie on their recent career move. + If you see someone falling behind walk beside them. + If you notice someone being ignored, find a way to include them. + If someone has been knocked down, lift them up (or at least try). + Always remind people of their worth but never forget your own. + If you see someone going through a hard time, be the person you needed when you were going through hard times, because it’s isolating when you think you’re the only one going through it. Imagine.... if each person just did ONE of these small acts, daily, imagine what the world could be like? So, remember, what we do (or don’t do), the decisions we make, and where we make them - matter. Every person matters. Their voice, their contributions, their perspective - matters.
